On our way back from the beach, we stumbled upon Althemenis Fish Restaurant and let me tell you it quickly became our go-to spot for the rest of our trip. I'm usually the type of person who loves trying new places while on vacation, but this tavern's incredible variety of seafood and Mediterranean cuisine kept us coming back every day. The menu is so diverse that each visit felt like a new experience, and we always left feeling satisfied and delighted.
The portions were generous, and the prices very reasonable considering the quality and quantity of the food. I could barely finish my meals, and my boyfriend - who never usually gets full at restaurants - was actually satisfied for the first time. He is not Greek and typically isn't a fan of traditional Greek dishes, but this place changed his mind. He tried Moussaka for the first time and genuinely enjoyed it. My yiayia might be a little offended, but I'm tempted to bring her here too!
As for the seafood, it did not disappoint. I've had octopus and calamari all over Greece this year - in Corfu, Zante and Evvoia - but Althemenis truly stood out. The dishes were fresh, flavourful and perfectly cooked, leaving us full and satisfied for the rest of the day.
A little tip: If you want a prime view of the sea, I highly recommend making a reservation. It seems like many people have discovered this gem and spots fill up fast. But even if you don't score that perfect seaside table, don't worry - the staff will make sure your experience is exceptional regardless. And honestly, once your food arrives, you'll probably be too focused on your plate to care much about the view!
Overall, our experience at Althemenis Fish Restaurant was simply unforgettable. It's rare for me to find a place that checks all the boxes - delicious food, great atmosphere and outstanding service - but this spot does it effortlessly. Without doubt, the next time I'm in Rhodes, Althemenis will be the first place I head to. If you are in search of authentic Greek flavours and a memorable dining experience, look no further - this is the...
Read moreGreat location, plenty of shade, good view. However, I suggest you avoid unless all you want is a bottle of beer.
For the quality and quantity supplied, the food is over-priced, and the fish dishes (which the taverna allegedly specialises in) were shockingly bad. We both ordered grilled dishes - which were more expensive than the fried options - only to receive dishes which looked like they had been fried. Angela ordered grilled shrimps - without chips - a dish which cost €18. The shrimps arrived with chips, demonstrating that the kitchen had not gotten the instruction. The shrimp meat was tough, and dry, having been significantly overcooked. Angela couldn't eat more than two. When challenging the kitchen regarding the quality of the food, the first response was "they definitely haven't been boiled". Who would ever have thought of boiling shrimp???? Guilt through association springs to mind. My Red snappers had been fried - no question, and whilst not terrible, certainly were not good. Even the chips (which I did want) were limp, and I couldn't touch the side salad, it looked so sad.
The host offered €8 discount. They should have deleted the shrimp dish from the bill completely. Also, I object to paying for bread, which I didn't ask for.
This is the first outright bad food experience we have had on Rhodes in...
Read moreThis felt like an episode of the show "kitchen's nightmare". The beans were so acid they felt like they could give you food poisoning, the waitress said it was probably from the tomato sauce. It must have come from a can as well as the beans. We didn't eat them but were still charged for it. The chicken was so dry it was uneatable without sauce (also industrial) it was probably frozen and then too much cooked. The tarama didn't taste like fish at all, it felt like the one you can buy at any supermarket. The symi shrimps were a little bit fried and damped in oil with a taste of sugar, the waitress said they were "fresh from the sea" but we wonder if for them that means frozen after they were bought fresh and then defrosted and panned. My boyfriend had a pastítsio with overcooked pasta and worrying gelatinous cream that tasted like it was made several days ago, he also didn't eat it. We had to pay for all of ot still, it was 40 euros for the worst restaurant of our life. For the same price you can eat delicious fresh food in restaurants in Rodos. The "cooking" was also slow. The place itself is nice but my advice is to not go there unless they...
