Calmo Mare — Restaurant in Municipality of Syros and Ermoupoli

One of the worst meals I’ve ever eaten. Came in June 2022 after seeing the amazing reviews.

Nice little restaurant in a cute area, waitress was lovely. Ordered the zucchini fritters and local cheese balls to start - these were both great. Tasted good, suitable portion too, but probably easy to get right.

After seeing all of the reviews rave about the grilled squid, we ordered this. All of the fish here is frozen, which didn’t sit well with me, but I decided to withhold judgement. Squid arrives in the mustard sauce and was the most rubbery and difficult thing to chew. At one point I genuinely choked on it and had to pull out this horrible stringy bit of squid from my throat. We left 3/4 of the dish.

Also ordered the traditional shrimp risotto. This tasted of absolutely nothing. Couldn’t have been more bland and disappointing. We again left over half.

We visited this restaurant on Saturday early afternoon, during its peak hour. Though the quality of delivered dishes was very good. For the first time we read and tasted parsley salad(totally recomended). Parsley salad looks like greek "skordalia" but it has the taste of Parsley. Also, for the first time we tasted "pancetta in the oven" which is also a must for your order, as long as you eat meat. Finally we ate grilled squid and for salad we ordered boiled greens. Apart from these, the mustard sauce was delicious too. All in all, Calmo Mare is a place worths visiting first of all for the unique tastes and secondly for the prices, as it meets the criterion of "value for money". Great food with local and not only dishes. Unfortunately the service didn't fulfil my expectations. We asked for a table outside and got the response that all tables outside were reserved and there was only one table available inside. We were there for almost 1,5 hours and just before we left got 2 of at least 4 tables busy. Another customer came by and got the same response. When he replied that he will only have a beer and leave when his company will come the waitress asked him if he wanted to sit outside on a table. He refused of course.
