The service was miserable. When we entered the restaurant, we greeted the waiters but were ignored. When we sat down the waiters threw a menu on the table without greeting us at all. At this point we should've left, but my girlfriend told me this restaurant was amazing.
We've been in Greece for 2 weeks and eat fish almost daily. A this restaurant we ate the worst and paid the most.
One single octopus leg costs 14€, which wasn't even properly grilled. I know, octopus can be a bit on the hard side, but this was the same as a hard chewing gum. Not edible. Not flavoured at all. This was also the only restaurant in Greece, which didn't serve lemons at all.
We also ordered 1/2 litres wine, which, after 20 minutes, didn't arrive. When I confronted the waiter, he said we didn't order, but when we ordered he explicitly asked, whether we want house made or a bottle.
We also ordered grilled sardines, which were very dry, not flavoured and simply not fresh. For a country like Greece it's simply not an option, to not have fresh fish. They even showed me the raw fish from the kitchen, which didn't look fresh at all.
Overall, this was the worst restaurant experience I had. It's overpriced, made to scam tourists, doesn't taste good, unfriendly staff. Avoid...
Read moreLocation, location, location...It's unlikely that anyone goes to this restaurant purely for the food. The menu is extensive and typical Greek taverna fare. Then there's a funny fill-it-in-yourself order form you hand the waiter and bland food arrives promptly.
The overwhelming reason to come here is the location. This is a large place and is literally on the beach just by the water at the far end of Varkiza beach. You're just by the sailing club and there are endless activities taking place (windsurfing and sailing clubs) to take your mind off the tasteless food. The location is so good (you can eat in your bathing costume or in a suit, neither is out of place), and this, coupled with the the fact that similar restaurants in the northern shores of Athens, on Schinias beach have now all sadly been closed down by the authorities means that this place is increasingly a unique sight for Athenians and reminds one of being on an island. You can stuff yourself with salty/overboiled/overcooked food and walk into the water, which will always mitigate the disappointment of the food. Staff are very pleasant and eager to help and it's always packed when sunny, you may want to book unless you get...
Read morePositive : Seafood is fresh, and ambiance is fantastic directly on the beach. Perfect for a leisurely lunch & swim.
Not so positive : Severely understaffed during the weekends. It took 20 mts until someone took our order, and could only order for food. We were halfway through our food (1 hour later?) until we could get someone to order drinks. We tried calling a waiter 3x and basically got ignored. By the time we finished and could pay for our meal (which took another 20 mts of flagging down staff after our meal), 6 tables around us have arrived (after us), ordered, had their meal, paid their bill and left.
Although we were (extremely) patient, polite and all smiles with the staff throughout the meal, I guess there is a thing as being "too foreign" at a local hangout.
I don't think I would return again unless accompanied by a local...
