Price & Quality mismatch
Arriving at this remote restaurant outside of Skala instantly makes you fall in love with the location. We were seated under rows of lights that crisscrossed above us. Our table was right on the edge of the peer with an unspoiled view of Chora and it’s nicely lit castle-top. A perfect set up for a lovely evening for two.
The overall set up of the place, the items on menu, and the high prices give you the impression of a high-end restaurant and that you are in for something exquisite. However, the execution of the food does not meet these expectations and leaves you feeling duped at the end of the meal.
We had 3 starters and a fish as our main. The biggest problem were the starters, which were improperly priced for the quality.
20 euros for a small portion of fish ceviche with a quite simple soya-ginger dressing was one of the recommend items on the menu. The dish in itself was not bad, but lacked refinement in order to justify such a price tag. The flavor was just too simple.
The quinoa salad was similarly pleasant, but was again missing that interesting dimension you would expect in a place like this. The flavor was almost bland, but the hint of mustard was a nice touch.
The fava with octopus was, however, the worst of the three. The flavor profile wasn’t balanced, the fava itself had a strong acidic flavor, there was probably too much vinegar on the octopus. The octopus was hard and chewy, which meant we left most of it on the plate. We informed the waiter of the issues with the dish and his answer was “thanks for the critique”.
The main was a nicely grilled fish. It was very tasty and perfectly cooked, but I wouldn’t expect anything less when you pay 60 euros per kilo. It was served in traditional Greek style with lemon oil and boiled vegetables, so no surprises here.
For drinks, we had one glass of white wine and a cocktail. The cocktail was good, but 15 euros is on the pricy end of the scale. I would expect to see such prices in Zurich where I live, but not on a Greek island. We would have taken two different white wines by the glass instead, but the restaurant only offers one type of white wine by the glass, so the range of choice was very limited in this regard.
The final thing that left a bad impression with us was not so much the 160€ bill, it was the comment that came along with it: “... service not included!”. Asking for tips and handouts is not something a proper restaurant does. Period. The comment came across extremely condescending.
To summarize, the grilled fish was very nice and the location is idyllic. But this is not enough for a restaurant that sets the bar so high, both in terms of presentation and as well as prices. Our recommendation to the owner would be to shorten the very extensive menu and focus on cooking fewer dishes, but making them better. As it stands today, this restaurant is...
Read moreWe visited Kyma and were impressed at first — everything was fresh and delicious. The service from the waiters was excellent. The shrimp and shrimp carpaccio were outstanding, and the lobster was also very tasty.
Unfortunately, our experience was spoiled by the attitude of the lady who welcomed us at the entrance. We were seated at a table for two, and at 21:30, she asked us to leave, as we haven’t finished our food yet, despite the fact that many other two-person tables were still empty. There was absolutely no flexibility or understanding shown, which felt far from good hospitality. Every other table around us had arrived before we did, yet we were the ones singled out and asked to leave. We truly couldn’t understand the reasoning.
The waiters, however, were polite and helpful — especially Konstantin, who tried his best to assist us. Sadly, what could have been a wonderful evening with amazing food turned into a very unpleasant experience that ruined our mood. We also noticed the same thing happened to other tables, which was even more...
Read moreKyma kyma kyma everybody is talking about it but nothing to talk about it all poor service high prices. Fish of the day was only 2 fishes according to our waiter. Because when I order the fish of the day he told me point at the table behind us took the last 2 fishes at 8:30 pm we asked for olive oil they brought us someone’s used olive oil half a can. Salad ohhh my god unreal for the price and a well knowing establishment cucumbers were mushy (old not fresh) tomatoes were same. We had pasta and salad bread olive oil and water for 4 people and payed €188.00 nearly €50.00 per person for the atmosphere not for the food. I don’t mind paying high prices for the food but it has to be tasty and fresh. IT WAS NOT. And also they should be asking us for coffee and desert no one did. Felt like come on get the hell out. I would strongly recommend LOZA restaurant as #1 in Patmos everything is so fresh and they do have a great views by the monastery everything so fresh and delicious and staff is so...
