I recently visited the Greek Tavern for a dinner reservation with my family, including a baby who needed a stroller. Unfortunately, our experience was marred by numerous issues that left us feeling frustrated and ultimately compelled us to leave before being fully satisfied.
Upon arriving at the restaurant right on time at 20 o'clock, we were hopeful that our table would accommodate the baby stroller as we had requested during the reservation. However, we were disappointed to find ourselves seated in a narrow corridor with no space for the stroller. This forced us to leave it outside, still within sight but necessitating us to hold the baby throughout the meal.
The waiter took our order at approximately 20:30, and it wasn't until 20:50 that the first orders were finally delivered. Throughout the waiting period, we attempted to add additional items to our order, only to be repeatedly told to "check with the other guy." As a group of over 10 people, including both kids and adults, we found it increasingly frustrating that basic items such as water, salads, and sauces would run out without the ability to promptly reorder. Our attempts to address this issue were met with the same response of "check the other guy," which became exasperating.
To add to our disappointment, the receipt we received at the end of the meal was a small handwritten sheet, containing only a few items and a total amount. This lack of professionalism and attention to detail further contributed to our negative experience.
Furthermore, we couldn't help but notice that during the time we were waiting to get served or have our order taken, other guests who arrived after us were served and attended to before us. This disregard for the order of arrival left us feeling overlooked and undervalued as customers.
Eventually, we gave up on waiting for the elusive "other guy" and decided to leave, still hungry. At this point, a man who seemed to be a manager approached our table with an obvious bad mood, supposedly to inquire about our problem and what we were still waiting for. This encounter served as the final straw, as his demeanor and approach were far from polite. It became clear that the service we had received was far below our expectations.
While I cannot fault the quality of the food itself, with dishes like squids and octopus being quite enjoyable, the overall experience was dominated by the subpar service. The food alone was not enough to compensate for the frustration and disappointment we felt due to the numerous service issues we encountered throughout the evening.
In conclusion, the Greek Tavern left a negative impression on us due to the lackluster service we experienced. Despite the decent quality of the food, the constant redirection to an elusive "other guy," the manager's unpleasant demeanor, the unprofessional receipt, and the inconsistency in serving guests in the order of arrival, ultimately overshadowed any culinary enjoyment we might have had. As a result, I would hesitate to recommend this establishment to others, particularly those seeking a pleasant dining experience for larger groups...
Read moreDisappointing dining experience. We’ve grown up going to this restaurants for two decades now, but this year the place has become only tourist-friendly. The prices, habits and quality of food has been driven away from what Greeks are used to. The restaurant closes by midnight and the kitchen at 11pm, which is unlikely of Greek tavernas that stay open until 2am.
The quality of the seafood is really poor and last night three people from our family got food poisoning after trying steamed mussels that were smelling off and the majority of which were closed (which indicates that they are not fresh).
When we complained about the unfreshness to the waiter, he replied that we are wrong and that closed mussels are usually the most fresh. He offered to boil them more to “open up”. After probably seeing that they couldn’t open, the waiter told us that he won’t bring the mussels at all. They ended up charging us for one of the two mussels we ordered, despite only having tried a few mussels. Customer service was awful.
Another night last week, we had ordered a table for 10 people at 10pm. When we went to get our reservation, the waiter did not let us sit in the restaurant. He said that the food supplies for the day were all over and would not have any food to serve us. It was the first time we had ever heard of such a situation.
All the Greeks in Gerakini who used to love Mouragio agree that this year the restaurant has demonstrated unacceptable behaviors and reduced its food quality. We will not...
Read moreWe love Greek food and tavernas so the first thing we learned about from our hotel staff was of Mouragio. We wasted no time and went there on the first evening of our arrival. Then we got back for 5 nights out of the total 7 we spent in Halkidiki. We were impressed every time:
Food was delicious, plenty and nicely served. We have tried the fresh fish (absolutely fabulous), octopus, Cretan cheese on the grill, herbs, stuffed calamari etc. etc. Prices are in line with food quality, no worries.
While we waited, we listened to the best Greek traditional music. Different music every time, mostly recorded concerts where you could listen to and feel the Greek vibe. Tell you one thing: the music was the fourth dish.
The last but not the least, the staff is exceptional, they seem like a big family willing to share everything with everyone. Always smiling and helpful, they were able to make jokes and make you feel most welcomed there.
Whenever we return to Halkidiki, Mouragio will be on our list of super favorite places to eat, so go there, have fun, eat some wonderful food, talk to wonderful people and pat yourself on the back for making such a...
