We stumbled on El driving back from Ag Ionis last night and were very glad that we stopped. Our server Panos made us feel immediately welcome, finding us a great spot to catch the most breeze on a hot night and take in the epic view. Panos told us the story of his family restaurant before diving into the menu of elevated, “modernized” Greek cuisine. El was a highlight of our trip to Pelion and an interesting contrast to the (delicious) traditional food we had been enjoying at many fine tavernas in the area. We enjoyed starters of octopus, deconstructed Greek salad (don’t miss this, it’s a gem), and beef carpaccio. Mains were a goat pasta and leg of lamb. Everything was excellent, can’t say enough good things about the food. Somehow surpassing the food was Panos’ knowledge of Greek wine. He pointed my wife and I toward two glasses which paired perfectly with our meals - a local Chardonnay for the goat pasta and a dry red from Paros for my leg of lamb. I ended up buying the bottle of the red which was just as good slightly chilled the next day. My wife and I will be back at El for our last meal of our trip later next week. ...
Read moreThis place was a lovely surprise in Pelion where we mostly enjoyed a more traditional cuisine version of tavernas. We’ve appreciated here the more contemporary touch given on the Greek dishes. We have been lucky enough to have met one the members of the family who runs the place, also welcoming and serving restaurant guests. Friendly, patient, with good humour, this young guy guided us through the dishes and drinks. Two starters were to come back to - a fish carpaccio with Pickled fennel / Lemon cream/ Horseradish aioli, as well as their version of bone marrow cooked with Beetroot Gel / Onion crumble / Parsley / Bearnaise. I was also pleased with the mushroomy version of their trachanas (the Greek version of a healthy comfort food). We also enjoyed an indigenous white wine made by a young Greek winery. A Blanc de noir made from 100% Xinomavro and aged for 10 months in new French and American barrels, and in contact with its fine wine lees for 3 months. We have an eye on it :). And of course, the terrace of the restaurant has a charming...
Read moreWell, how should I start. One of the best restaurants I had the opportunity to visit. The staff was amazing and swiftly responded to my every need. The atmosphere is, uff, you seat and you have the nicest view of the sea. And now let’s say something about the food. I had 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners at this restaurant. At my first dinner I had a nice talk with the sommelier that suggested me some wines according to my taste. We found a perfect choice to go with my beef carpaccio and beef steak. I have tried some of their bread and mushroom butter. Very good. I ended my dinner with a pistachio panacotta. Pure heaven. For my second dinner I chose seabass ceviche, Oh my goodness. For the main course I hade a beef steak again and added a thyme sauce because they serve it with a hollandaise sauce. Both times I went to sleep with a nice smile on my face. For breakfast you could choose whatever you wanted, the variety of options was big. To summarize my visit. I spent two nights eating like a king. Thank you for your...
