Beware of scam! While their food is the best in the city, their business tactics are sneaky and dangerous for patrons who do not speak Hungarian. While in Nyiregyhaza last year, we had some American friends join us for dinner one evening. When the bill came, it was higher than expected. When we inquired about it - in Hungarian - they informed us that because the guests at our table were not Hungarian, there was an added surcharge for non-Hungarians. The reason, they put it, was because "foreigners never tip, so we have an extra charge for those who are not Hungarian." Lucky for us we speak the language, otherwise - we would have been charged more too.
Again, I have to admit that I have never been disappointed with their food - and that's as it should be, considering they are probably the most expensive restaurant in the city - they have a fantastic location, right in the main square - Kossuth Ter - and for westerners traveling to the city, it's still cheaper than eating in Budapest, or other bigger European cities.
That having been said, the wait staff is very arrogant, not at all helpful, and put out when you ask about the food. They are sneaky with this added on surcharge, as it is not stated on their menu anywhere that they do this - and it is unfair that they charge foreigners, and not locals. In short, the only tip I can give those interested in dining here goes as follows: Either be content with being scammed - or learn Hungarian...
Read moreLong-running John's Pub is a restaurant in the center of Nyregyháza with a very traditional appearance, as you would expect in any Hungarian restaurant. The menu is centered on the distinctive and wellknown Hungarian cuisine.
I haven't tried as many dishes as I would have liked, but the well-known tartare beefsteak was good, enjoyable, and came in a sizable portion, which is very typical of Hungarian cousin. I don't know about you, but I take it as a positive, so keep it in mind. If you aren't that hungry, you can take the leftovers home.
The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and offers a very quick service.
It would be worthwhile to check them out if you were to stroll along the lovely ...
Read moreNice restaurant, nice atmosphere. Went there with my girlfriend. The restaurant has a wine list, with nice wines. I prefer beers, unfortunately they do not have a good choice of beers (just one kind of beers on tap). The plates were really nicely decorated and the meal were excellent. I would give five stars (how I planned originally) but it was a mistake with the bill when we got it (my girlfriend drinked wine but on the bill it writed that she drinked the most expensive one, and when we asked the server to correct it, he said we ordered that kind of wine). So we paid it, we would go back, but definitely I will ask for...
