To put it mildly, I didn’t have a good experience with Aldan restaurant.
In fact, it was the only restaurant or establishment in Seydisfjordur where I had a very disappointing experience.
The first night we went to Aldan, we ordered drinks and sat in the restaurant. We ordered several drinks over the course of the evening and there were no issues whatsoever. The place was probably about half to three-quarters full that night. Having had a good experience that first night and given that the town is understandably limited in terms of available venues, we went back the next night. This time, the exact same staff came up to us as we were about to sit down to inform us that we cannot have drinks inside – that we must drink outside in what was very cold, windy, and rainy – because inside is only available for those who want food. This was at 9.10pm and there was only 1 table of 2 served with food – a total contrast with the night before, and yet with the same staff. We were told that there was “heating” outside, but this was so weak that it didn’t give any comfort at all. We left immediately.
The contrast between how we were treated the two nights – by the same staff – was shocking. I would completely understand if on the second night it was almost full, and so they needed to reserve any available tables for food. But the fact it was late and almost totally empty, the policy enforced made no sense. We felt unwelcome, yet this policy wasn’t enforced by the same staff the first night we were there when it was far busier. It made no sense at all. There is no logic to it. As a business owner myself, it made even less sense. Why needlessly alienate paying custom?
That said, the next night we said we’d try the food, to at least give that a shot. Whilst the food was good, it wasn’t the best we experienced in Iceland. It was distinctly under-seasoned, at least the cod was. The staff that night were very friendly and attentive, and so no issues there this time. Outside the restaurant, as it came toward 9.30pm, there was a group of 4 men shouting quite loud at the top of their voice. They were openly screaming at one point and discussing drugs. Their obnoxious conduct was nonetheless considered acceptable by Alden staff because nothing was done to address it. It was embarrassing. We left as soon as we could.
I cannot speak for the hotel accommodation but based on other people’s reviews, I’m glad that I can’t.
Alden was the worst place we visited not only in Seydisfjordur, but in our entire Icelandic trip altogether – and this having visited Iceland 9 times in the past 3 years.
I simply cannot recommend it, having had many other more welcome and enjoyable experiences elsewhere...
Read moreThis restaurant was one of the more refined spots we visited during our stay in Iceland — definitely a bit more upscale than others in the area, both in terms of price and presentation, but overall very much worth it.
The interior is stylish and thoughtfully designed, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were incredibly friendly and professional, which added to the positive experience right from the start.
We started with the reindeer tartare, which was a unique and surprisingly delicious dish — definitely something we hadn’t tried before. For mains, we enjoyed a beautifully cooked lamb and the fish of the day, which happened to be codfish. Both dishes were flavorful and well-prepared, highlighting the quality ingredients.
For dessert, we tried a twisted doughnut, our first one in Iceland. While it was interesting to try, it wasn’t quite to our taste — probably a matter of personal preference more than quality.
Overall, this restaurant stands out with its elevated menu, cozy design, and great service. It’s a bit more expensive than other places nearby, but if you’re looking for something a bit special, it’s definitely highly...
Read moreWe have traveled to many countries/cities that are food capitals of the world and this has been by far the BEST restaurant we’ve ever been to!!!!!! From the appetizers, to the sides, to the main courses, to the desserts, everything we tried was phenomenal and the presentation was also amazing. All we wanted was a late night snack and we ended up ordering more and more food and having a five course meal. My husband and I love cooking and we are always able to replicate foods from the places we visit but we definitely will not be able to replicate Nordic Restaurant. The food was magical and the service was great. The atmosphere was also extremely cozy and felt like we were in someone’s home. They’ve also got a good selection of beers and coffee. Not to mention, the location was also great, in downtown Seyðisfjörður. If you will be near this town, make it a priority to stop here!!!!! This place seriously deserves a...
