Rajanna Thatte Idli: A Mixed Bag of South Indian Delights
Our recent visit to Rajanna Thatte Idli on June 18th, 2025, presented a unique dining experience. This establishment operates from a very small shop, with a distinct model where food isn't prepared on-site but rather brought in and served. The menu is notably concise, featuring only two primary items: Thatte Idli and a choice of Lemon or Mango Rice, complemented by Maddur Vada.
We started with their namesake, the Thatte Idli. While it was served warm, we found its texture to be unfortunately rubbery and quite hard. This was a significant detractor from what should ideally be a soft and fluffy idli experience. However, the accompanying chutney was a redeeming factor, boasting a good flavor that somewhat salvaged the idli. It's worth noting that despite our personal preference, there seemed to be a good number of other patrons who appeared to enjoy the idlis.
In contrast, the Mango Rice was a definite highlight. It offered a delightful flavor profile and was genuinely enjoyable. Our only minor wish would have been for it to be slightly more moist, which would have elevated it even further.
The Maddur Vada proved to be another winner. It was perfectly crisp and, when paired with the same flavorful chutney, created a highly satisfying combination. This duo was undoubtedly the star of our meal.
Overall Recommendation: Based on our experience, we would strongly recommend the Mango Rice and Maddur Vada at Rajanna Thatte Idli. The rice was flavorful, and the vada was a perfect, crispy treat. Unfortunately, the Thatte Idli did not live up to expectations due to its texture. While the chutney was good, it couldn't fully compensate for...
Read moreWe visited Rajanna Tatte Idly, located at 28/F, 10th Main Rd, Hampi Nagar, RPC Layout, Vijayanagar, Bengaluru, which is directly opposite the Hampinagar Vijayanagar City Central Library West Zone. Here, Rajesh, the brother of Chetan, oversees the shop, but I couldn't help but wonder why it holds the name Rajanna Tatte Idly when Rajesh is the one managing it. I discovered that both idly and lemon rice are prepared at the BM Chetan Tatte Idly shop and are served at both Chetan Idly and Rajanna Idly. They share the same kitchen for preparing these dishes, so the idly batter used is the same for both the small idly and the tatte idly.
During my visit, the place was quite crowded. Unfortunately, the idly was not properly steamed or baked and came out very sticky, which I found unappealing. On the other hand, the chitranna, or lemon rice, was quite good. They also offer Maddur vada, which is priced at 10 rupees per piece. The large tatte idly is charged at 35 INR each, while the full serving of lemon rice costs 40 INR, and a half plate is priced at 20 INR. A unique aspect of their service is that they use disposable mutukada ele (mutuka leaves) for serving, which adds to the experience.
It's worth noting that the tatte idly is only available at Rajanna Idly, while the small idly is served at BM Chetan Idly, and both establishments offer essentially the same three items: idly, chitranna, and...
