In between those narrow, bustling and busy streets and alleys of the closely packed buildings of Veraval's market place, this restaurant is hidden deep within one of those old, unpainted buildings inside a gully that is accessible only by walk. The gate to the restaurant is so tiny that you may even miss it between all those shops, and after climbing a huge flight of very steep stairs which are a hazard to even the most active people, you reach the first floor, there you finally enter Sagar restaurant, a Vegetarian Punjabi restaurant that smells like it hasn't seen sunlight in a very long time with a slight hum of lime fragrance somewhere. It's in such a deep hidden location, that it wouldn't be surprising to find so many empty tables. As disappointing as the ambience may seem, i shall not talk much about it but directly jump to the food. The menu was extensive with so many options to choose from and it screams authentic Punjabi food throughout the menu except for a couple of sections that showcase other cuisine menus. I came in with my parents and we ordered a Punjabi Thali, a Garlic Roti, Paneer Mughalai, and salted Buttermilk. The Fixed Punjabi Thali was a lot for a stomach and it was no wonder that my parents struggled to finish the food. However the taste of each curry and all the accompaniments along with the rice and Rotis were just amazing. A fine balance but with great heaviness to the palette towards the end of the meal and on the stomach as well somewhere before the tongue. The onions and lemon has certainly helped in finishing the food at least for the most apart after which it was quite the strenuous task. As for the items we have ordered separately, that is for myself in A-La-Carte, The Garlic Naan had me how beautifully its been made gorgeously and graciously dressed is ghee and fresh coriander. It was soft not to harsh on the teeth or too tough to tear and I was a happy man with that bread. Coming to the curry, Paneer Mughalai may have sounded fancy and unique to this author, but it is quite the same as any other Masala-laden curry sauce with Paneer in it. In most ways it was similar to a cross-hybrid between Paneer Tikka Masala and Paneer Pasanda. But I surely didn't exactly know what to expect when I ordered for the Mughalai Paneer. Nonetheless, it was a fantastic curry just as any other rich, indulgent, spicy and fervent Punjabi curry would taste like with grilled, marinated, roasted or fried Paneer. But honestly, this author couldn't tell if there was any difference between the gravy Paneer and vegetable curries of the Punjabi Thali and the curry I ordered for myself since they all taste nearly the same with very minute differences. While the taste was fantastic, I just wondered how monotonous it was all. Last and not the least, the buttermilk was a fine refresher to the mouth and the raging, hot stomach after all that spicy and hot food with a hint of salt to make things easier on the tongue and satisfying. The service was nothing much of notice. It was quite forgettable since the way we wanted to eat, required no servicing or any tipping. At the end of the day, it was a good experience. Not exactly one this food-lover would recommend and I say this after having tonnes of Punjabi food from many restaurants across many places and my quest to find the best is quite a long shot, but if you find yourself in this area and want some decent vegetarian food but especially have a quick meal, this is one place you could...
Read moreWe reached the restaurant at the eleventh hour, and still the staff happily served us. They only suggested we order fast, as it was closing time. We ordered a special Punjabi thali; it had two Sabjis—paneer and mixed vegetables—dal, rice (chawal), 3 tandoori rotis, salad, and chachh. Everything in this thali was freshly prepared, not spicy, and in sufficient quantity. It is located on a side lane, and the ambience is calm with little fragnance. The seats were comfortable and didn't feel any uneasiness. The AC was working fine. They do have an online...
