Read moreTried the much-hyped Matilda Cake at Paulâs Creamery today, and I have to say, it was extremely underwhelming. At âč800+ GST for a single slice, I was expecting not just great taste but an immersive experience. Sadly, it delivered neither.
First off, the presentation was poor. The cake was served on a flat plate, so the caramel sauce just spilled everywhere. Iâm not sure if thatâs intentional, but from a design and user-experience standpoint (and yes, food presentation is part of that), it felt careless. If youâre trying to emulate the iconic Matilda cake from the movie, at least get the feel of it right, not just pour sauce for the sake of drama.
By the time it reached the table, the so-called âliftoffâ element (which I assume is supposed to be the big reveal) had already oozed out, completely ruining the experience. There was nothing left to look forward to.
As a baker myself, I can guess the real cost of a slice like this to be like âč250 max, including the sauces. If the sauces are made in-house, it would cost even less. So the pricing here feels unjustified and exploitative, especially given the small space, mediocre ambience, and lack of thoughtful service. A price of 400-450 rupees is more that justified and anything beyond that is just pure greed.
Whatâs more disappointing is that larger, better cafes in cities like Chennai offer richer cakes, better plating, and a far more polished atmosphere, at a much lower price point. This felt like a case of taking advantage of limited local options rather than offering true value.
Overall, it felt like a marketing gimmick rather than a genuine food experience. Not worth the price, not...
Read moreI'm rating the place low because the management or staff turns a blind eye towards the unruly, obscene behaviour of some people, especially certain groups of youngsters whose PDA is quite disturbing. And makes one wonder whether you should take young children to this place anymore.
There is always a bunch of unruly crowd of youngsters; of course, they're their target customers. So ya. But, the last time I visited the place, there were 3 youngsters sitting in the corner seat of the creamery, two boys and a girl and one of the boys was leaning towards the girl with his hands inside her T-Shirt/ Blouse, and giggling and laughing loudly the whole time. There are cameras around and they didn't seem to mind it or the crowd. They didn't seem to be bothered by anything going around them. It was super uncomfortable sitting by their side and having to bear their obscenity and we regretted ordering the waffles, which we neither could enjoy nor eat it in peace.
The management should put up a sign saying no PDA and tell these people to behave. It's not just youngsters like them who visit the place. Families too visit the place and we have the right to enjoy our ice creams and waffles in peace. I know you need young customers, but we too are your customers.
Next time I visit the place and see something like this happening, I'm calling the...
