I stumbled upon this cafe on our recent trip to thekkady. My wife, daughter and I were famished and also in need of a clean toilet. It was 6pm as we reached Kuttikanam, the fog was heavy, all you could see were the headlights in front of you and a shadow of the road. Then a distant sign reading cafe showed up. From our past experiences cafes this far out are less than average, but as we approached we saw the name TRAVAANs. A group of people sitting on the patio table with lots of food and happy smiles on their faces was an assurance for us and we decided to dine there. As soon as we entered we were welcomed with beaming smiles. The woodwork interiors immediately gave is a sense of calm and a feeling of home. My 2yr old immediately hopped on to the high chair while my wife rushed to the bathroom. 5 minutes later she comes out with a sigh of relief that it’s a very clean and well maintained bathroom, which is very difficult to come upon these days. With our spirits restored and long awaited bathroom break done we ordered dinner. My wife and daughter got a Aglio olio pasta which i ordered the chicken club sandwich along with a filter coffee and an espresso. The sandwich - it came to the table pretty quick but it was fresh and warm, the trick i guess is their pre made filling. It was well toasted and the veggies were fresh and crunchy. The pasta - an Indian version of the Italian dish but tasty nonetheless. Perfect cooked pasta with creamy cheese and seasoned with herbs. My daughter, who is a picky eater loved this dish. The coffee - So this was what made me appreciate this little cafe even more. The owners of the cafe are coffee estate owners with their own brand of ground coffee. The filter coffee was beautiful, it had chicory but just enough so as not to overwhelm the flavour of the coffee. We ended up getting a second one for the road. The espresso was decent, it was flavourful but i felt the coffee extraction was incomplete, could be due to a smaller grind size. The crema layer was light so it lacked that fullness in flavour. It’s no dealbreaker, I’m just a coffee enthusiast so it’s the small details i enjoy in my coffee. But mind you we did order the filter coffee twice and the espresso did rejuvenate me for the hour long drive ahead. I still believed this coffee has more potential and ended up buying half a kilo of the whole beans. And after the perfect grinding this is a beautiful arabica roast coffee. Ive so far used it in my Moka pot, my french press and also made a cold brew with it. I’ll need to make more trips just to buy the beans now. The staff were super friendly and took good care of my daughter as my wife and i ate. They engaged in playing hide and seed with her and within minutes you could hear her giggling and running around the place. We finished our dinner and sat there for 15 more minutes just to enjoy the fog outside. My mind wandered to a familiar night time cafe painting which i adore and realised that this place gave off that energy.
