"Wasabee" is synonymous with the authentic Oriental, especially Japanese cuisine in the City of Joy! The name itself is derived from a very popular Japanese ingredient - 'Wasabi' or Japanese Horshradish, which is used a condiment for sushis or other delicacies.
The people of Kolkata are surely quite experimental with their food choices, but not a lot of restaurants here are yet offering Japanese Cuisine. But you can surely opt for Wasabee to taste the true flavours of Japan. If you haven't tried this cuisine yet and is sceptical about doing so, I would highly urge you to give it a shot. Even if you don't want to experiment much, you can go for the Chinese, Burmese or Singaporean dishes offered by the restaurant.
Wasabee is conveniently located at Deshapriya Park, in the lane besides the Priya Cinemas. The interior is asthetically designed. Asian paintings, huge hand fans adornes the walls which provides a strong Asian vibe. There is a seating capacity of about 25-30 people at a time.
Now coming to the food, we tried various items from different cuisines - We started off with the Som Tom Thai Salad, which is a popular Thai salad featuring shredded raw papaya in a spicy chilly dressing and topped with lots of roasted peanuts.
For Appetizer we went for -
Pepper Garlic Fish Dry : The fish was beautifully cooked and flaky inside. It was coated with a hot pepper garlic sauce. The flavours were so tantalizing that we kept craving for more
Crab Stick Temaki : Temaki is essentially a cone shaped sushi. The sticky rice is rolled inside a nori sheet from outside and stuffed with plump crab Stick and fresh veggies inside.
Ebi Uramaki : Uramaki is the"Inside out" sushi, where the rice is supposed to be on the outside and the sea weed is supposed to be "hidden" inside. And Ebi stands for prawn. The prawn used inside was fresh, and the sushi tasted great when paired with soya sauce and wasabi.
One main attraction is that, the sushis are prepared in front of your eyes. You can see, how the sushi is prepared from scratch by the magic of the chef's hand.
For the main course we opted for -
Burmese Curry
Veg Yaki Soba Noodles
Chicken Mee Goreng
Mixed Yaki Misi Chachan Rice
Veg Burnt Garlic Fried Rice
Goong Pad Pak ( Prawn )
Fish Szechwan
Chicken Green Curry
We gulped down all the delicious delicacies along with two refreshing cocktails Pink Panther and Mexican Sunset.
Finally we ended our meal on a sweet note with these two amazing desserts -
Blow Hot and Blow Cold : It was essentially fried icecream. Vannila icecream was coated with descicated coconuts and fried to a get a golden yellow colour.
Caramel Custard : The custard was rich and creamy. It was quiet firm, unlike the others I have tried before. The sweetness was very well balanced.
The pocket pinch varies from cuisine to cuisine. Where the Chinese food might seem very reasonable but Japanese dishes seems to the priced steeply, owing to the fact that most of the ingredients used in it, are required to be imported from outside.
The staffs are extremely professional and hospitable. Overall, I totally enjoyed my dining experience at Wasabee, and would like to...

Read moreA good Asian restaurant in the city having choices of not only Japanese but Thai and Chinese cuisine as well. Although Japanese dishes are the main attraction, it is really good for someone trying Japanese for the first time. I would have given 3.5 but no options here, so 3 (I like to be critical;)
Ambience: 4/5
The ambience is really good and calming. The decorations really compliment the theme here. I would have liked the furniture and some seating arrangements as Japanese. Only one washroom and wash basin inside it, I don't like this idea personally. The wash basins should be kept outside.
Service: 5/5
Beyond excellence. A few of us went for Japanese cuisine for the first time and the service guy not only helped us with the choices of the dishes according to taste but also helped us with the food as well. He was mindful that we may not be familiar with chopsticks and also sushi. They really like their job which is definitely visible.
Mocktail: 2.5/5
Nothing special about those. The Virgin mojito and blue lagoon was extra sweet, I could not find any mint flavour or lime in the mojito, it was flat. I liked the green apple though. Orange blast is really good and compliments starters with its spicy and tangy taste, I would definitely recommend this. Please avoid virgin pinna colada, that is waste.
Food: 3.5/5
Sushis(5 out of 5)-- These are a must try here. Exceptional in one word. We ordered a Non veg Sushi Boat and a Non veg Sushi Platter. Taste wise they both were similar. Sea foods wrapped with traditional rice dipped in wasabee will just blow your mind (somewhat literally). That wasabee sauce directly hits your brain as soon as it goes into the mouth. Perfectly cooked, well seasoned and I liked the idea of mayonnaises spread across as it would help first timers with the raw taste.
Chicken Udon Noodles(3 out of 5):
This is a Hakka noodles with somewhat south asian flavours garnished in Japanese style. It's not worth the money, it also doesn't suit the theme and the expectations of a customer.
Pork Tonkatsu Ramen(4 out of 5):
Overall a decent ramen. I liked the clean and simple broth. The meat was well cooked, noodles perfectly blended with the flavour. What I didn't like was a full boiled egg on top! It should have been soft boiled. Also lack of veggies or sea weeds. It was more of a kind of noodles dipped in pork broth. Although I liked the taste, hence 4 stars.
Conclusion:
Good restaurant to try Japanese but beware of the budget. The dishes dig dip...
