Kokan Spice serves traditional आगरी style veg and non veg preparations. The Chef Sanmati Chetan Mokal and her family members were offering these delicious preparations from almost 3-4 years under the brand Ekvira Foods which was a delivery only outlet, until recently when they decided to open up a full time restaurant, the restaurant is located in kothrud in the dead end of joshi museum lane. The Aagri (आगरी) food preparations is usually found in Thane, Panvel and Navi Mumbai area and also in Alibaug. The restaurant has a seating capacity of around 35-40 pax and the seating is comfortable. As per my understanding there are hardly any restaurants in Pune which serves Aagri cuisine preparations so when I got the opportunity to explore it I was pretty excited.
Prawns Rawa & Bombil Rawa Fry: Both the preparations were spot on, the marination was really good in taste, it was slightly moist and medium spicy in taste. #Highlyrecommended
Mutton Lapeta: Mutton pieces done in a thick onion based masala was good in taste, the masala was really good and it went well along with the Wade, however I felt that the onion quantity can be reduced a bit. #Recommended
Kokani Wade: The wade were superbly done, they were well fried and felt absolutely oil free, the coating was slightly crispy and is an excellent option to go along with Sea food or chicken/mutton dishes. #Musthave
Solkadhi: Excellent, one of the best and must have dishes at Kokan Spice, prepared from coconut milk was medium thick in consistency, it was creamy and rich in taste, it was served at room temperature. In My top 5 #Musthave places for solkadhi in Pune.
Aalni Soup: The soup was watery and didn’t had the flavor of stock, the only dish which didn’t impress me.
Crab Curry: The management has started offering crab thali on Friday Saturday and Sunday from this week onward, the crab curry was medium thick in consistency and was superb in taste, it was slightly spicy that usual, the mix of salt sweet and spicy flavors was so well balanced, indeed an outstanding preparation. #Musthave
Ghavane: Maharashtrain style rice flour crepes or dosa was done to perfection, it also had some finely chopped coriander it it, I have never seen a ghavan with coriander in it, nevertheless it was good in taste. It was thin and soft and perfect on texture part. #Highlyrecommended
Surmai Thali: Surmai Fish Tawa Fry, Fish Curry, Sukat Chutney, Rice Portion, 2 Chapati / 1 Rice Bhakari, Sukat Portion, Solkadi Portion, the surmai tawa fry version which was perfectly done, the masala was flavorful, the curry had medium coarsely grinded masala and had a spicy hint, it was medium thick in consistency and the flavours were impressive, this curry was one of the best which I have had. The fish curry that is served at Kokan spice varies daily and is prepared with surmai, pomfret and prawns base on a random rotation basis. The Thali is definitely a #Musthave
Ice Cream Soda: A simple drink which has carbonated water with ice cream flavour syrup was good in taste. They have a couple more options in this cold beverage.
Overall: The Aagri Food is supposed to be slightly spicy than usual especially the curries, also dry roasted coconut is one of the most important ingredient in Aagri Food Preparations. The Aagri style curries are usually a little bit thin/watery in consistency, chef sanmati updated me that she has tuned the curries to be slightly thick in consistency to cater the local crowd with no compromise on the flavor part. The food was truly homely and was one of the best and comfort meals which I had in recent times. The actual dish quantity might vary as I had requested the owners to serve smaller portions. They also have an option of Pocket Friendly thali's which comes with fish or chicken curry along with rice. Starting from this week they are also offering a crab thali so do check for the availability.

Read moreThis is one of the hidden gems in Kothrud which has recently opened up and serves authentic Kokani style seafood. I was here with 3 friends for lunch few days back and we started off by having Mirgunda platter which is an assortment of various papads , this is a must have dish here the crisps are non oily and very tasty...also they are fun to have throughout the meal. We ordered some starters as well like the Prawns Rawa Fry and Prawns Koliwada... Both were distinctively unique in taste and were the highlights of our lunch that day as the Prawns were very fresh and tasty as well. Moving on we decided to try to some Special Chicken Thali which was also good with some soft Tandool Bhakri to go along with it. The chicken was well prepared in different spices other than the usual one so it was good to have as well. As sides along with the Thali we had some Bangda and Surmai Fry because Kokani food is incomplete without Fish and Solkadhi. The desserts were extremely well done specially fell in love with the Gajar Halwa which was prepared freshly and the texture of the Halwa was on point as well. I definitely would...
