If you're on the road and craving a memorable meal, Highway Shacks is the place to be! Nestled along the highway, these little gems offer a dining experience that is both delightful and surprising.

The ambiance is simple and rustic, perfect for a quick stop or a leisurely meal. The charm of the place is its laid-back atmosphere, where you can unwind and enjoy the scenic view as trucks and cars whiz by. The staff is warm and welcoming, always eager to serve with a smile.

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show—the food! Highway Shacks has a menu that caters to all kinds of travelers, offering everything from spicy Indian curries to freshly grilled tandoori dishes. Their parathas are perfectly crispy, packed with flavorful fillings, and served with a generous dollop of butter. Pair that with a hot cup of chai, and you have the perfect combination for a roadside breakfast.

For lunch and dinner, the dal tadka and butter chicken are must-tries, with rich, authentic flavors that leave you craving more. Vegetarians are in for a treat too, with dishes like paneer tikka and aloo gobhi that are packed with taste. And if you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss their homemade halwa—it's the perfect end to a hearty meal.

One of the best things about Highway Shacks is the affordability. You get hearty portions without burning a hole in your pocket, making it the ideal stop for budget-conscious travelers. Plus, the food is always fresh, with an unmistakable homely touch that you won’t find at regular restaurants.

Overall, Highway Shacks is a must-stop for food lovers. It’s the perfect mix of good food, great hospitality, and that quintessential highway vibe. Whether you're a solo traveler, with friends, or on a family trip, this place will leave you...

Based on the weird, unrelated, misguided response from the owner, am clarifying my review.

  1. Wrong billing - Served one naan, but charged for three.
  2. Poor quality food - Too much of dirty oil and food lacks enuf ingredients. Food made fresh doesn't mean it is good. It's the ingredients that make it good. The oil used is clearly a bad one. By night most of us had upset stomach.
  3. Service was slow and poor. Don't have to explain more on this. But to clarify the owner, we did not drink, (we never drank alcohol in our lives) and abuse anyone. Whatever we ordered, it just took too long.
  4. In spite of all this, the price is high. I agree with owner here. We should have gone to another restaurant. And everyone who is reading this, should do that too. Not because the price is high, I have had my lunches and dinners at places like Novotel, but I found them worthy of the price. But this food, is definitely not worthy of the price. Which unfortunately we found it too late. And hence this review, so others don't do the same mistake.
  5. Don't have a lot of items on the menu. To clarify, they have hundreds listed on their menu, but they don't have half of them to serve. And now am glad they don't, because eating those would have upsetted our stomach even more.

Our tempo driver gave warning to the owner too, that if their food quality does not improve, he would never ever bring any of his customers to this...

Highway shacks around Shillong offer a unique culinary experience, blending local flavors with rustic charm. Here’s a review of some standout spots:

Dine at Jiva: This roadside shack is known for its steaming hot momos, which are perfectly spiced and served with a tangy dipping sauce. The view of the rolling hills adds to the experience.

Pyntei Restaurant: Famous for its traditional Khasi dishes, Pyntei serves a mean plate of jadoh (rice cooked with meat) that’s fragrant and hearty. Pair it with their spicy chutneys for an authentic taste.

Mawlynnong Eatery: Located near the cleanest village in Asia, this spot offers freshly caught fish cooked in local herbs. The simplicity of the dishes showcases the freshness of the ingredients. Roadside Tea Stalls: Don't miss the local tea, served with biscuits or homemade snacks. The warmth of the tea, combined with the vibrant local atmosphere, makes for a perfect pit stop. Each of these shacks encapsulates the essence of Shillong’s culinary scene, making them must-visit spots for food...

I rather had an unpleasant experience last night. Thali was over, so we ordered things based on the waiter’s recommendation - Chicken masala, tandoori roti, and rice. I initially wanted to order chicken curry for rice but he told me to order chicken masala. He confirmed that the gravy would be enough for rice and roti. Dinner was served and gravy wasn’t enough. When I called for him, he said we have to pay for it. I agreed for it. He came back again after checking with the manager and asked us to order something else. I had to order dal fry. It’s not about trying to making some extra bucks but when it comes to food, your recommendations should be right because customers won’t know the quantity you serve.

I have dined at this restaurant numerous times with both friends and family. We have sampled their breakfast and lunch, and there are plenty of options on the menu. Their specialty is thali, which is quite popular among both tourists and locals. We've tried nearly all the cuisines they offer, and each time we visit, we are never disappointed. Whether it's the service or the quality of the food, everything meets high standards. I really appreciate how well they maintain the place; the restrooms are always very clean. Overall, my experiences here have been excellent, and I plan to keep coming back. 5/5 for all categories.

We reached this place by 3 PM approx. for lunch. This place offers both veg and non-veg options. (Not a halal restaurant though) The fried rice (pic) varieties here are authentic, with their small rice grains and perfect Chinese taste. we had ordered soups, chicken pakoda (pic), Paneer mutter, tikka, egg thali, chicken curries, naan, roti, schezwan fried rice.. All tasted good. Basically NE people have less salt in food comparatively, so no complains on that. we can sprinkle and manage the taste buds :) Overall, this place impressed us with it taste as well as price (300-400 per head)
