Today is Behdieñkhlam Festival. I took out the car with the intention to go try out a place a little further than my daily route. So I'm at @kavarna_cafe in 7th Mile Upper Shillong. I've been passing this place but never ever remembered to halt & try out the food. It's been already 4 years since it opened. Thanks to @headovermeals1820 for sharing me one of their post that got me here today. Kavárna in Czech means Cafe.
I entered inside a small cafe with a simple but cozy ambience to it. The lady at the counter came up to hand me the menu. It had a bit of Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Thai, Burmese, Nepali, Italian, American & Indian. Everything was available except for the Tandoori items. Now it took me 15 mins to actually figure out what I wanted. Finally I ended up ordering a plate of Indonesian Sambal Prawns, semi-gravy, along with Pad See Ew noodles from Thailand. I was hoping that they would somehow match.
The food did take about 20mins to get ready. It came in 2 separate serving plates but I arranged everything on one plate.
The Pad See Ew noodles were flat noodles wok tossed with some cabbage leaves. The Prawns had 8 big proper & succulent pieces simmered in a bright red & thick sambal sauce. I took a bite of the prawn & it was so satisfying. It had a slight burn to it without overshadowing the flavors of the prawns. It was sheer delight. The noodles were also good but were a pale contrast to the prawns. They were also a little too moist but then were just perfect for the prawns.
Service was pleasant & polite. Definitely worth coming back again to try out the other interesting dishes.

The café has a great selection of coffee, teas, and refreshing beverages. We tried their cappuccino and iced tea—both were excellent. The food menu is also impressive, with a mix of light bites, sandwiches, pasta, and desserts. The portions were decent and everything we ordered was fresh and flavorful.
What stands out most about Kavárna is its ambiance—perfect for reading, working on a laptop, or just unwinding with friends. The soft music and welcoming staff add to the overall experience.

Read moreA tasty nook in Upper Shillong to satiate your hunger pangs. It's right by the roadside and parking is available for two-wheelers at the front porch or cars (2-3) can do it nearby. Coming to the food, it was filling yet not bloating, which means they use fresh ingredients and good oil. Service could be slow because as they say, everything is made fresh and nothing is reheated. I'll take their word after having 2 lunches there comprising chicken fried rice, Schezwan fried rice, pork garlic etc. Tends to get crowded during weekends, expect a waiting time. Also, restroom facilities are at the guest...
