If you’re exploring the beauty of Meghalaya and need a place to recharge, Orange Roots Restaurant is the perfect stop. This vegetarian gem not only serves delicious food but also offers an exceptional experience with its humble and courteous staff and added conveniences like a charming tuck shop for souvenirs.

The Food

The food at Orange Roots is a delight for vegetarians. Their North Indian thali is a must-try, with perfectly cooked dishes like dal, sabzi, roti, and rice, complemented by a sweet treat to end the meal. The flavors are authentic, and the ingredients are fresh, making every bite memorable.

For those craving South Indian cuisine, their dosas and idlis are equally satisfying, served with rich sambar and flavorful chutneys. The portions are generous, and the variety ensures everyone finds something they love.

The Exceptional Staff

What truly sets Orange Roots apart is the hospitality of its staff. They are incredibly humble, soft-spoken, and courteous, ensuring that every guest feels welcomed and valued. Their attentiveness and warm demeanor elevate the dining experience, making you want to return.

The Tuck Shop

The restaurant also features a tuck shop, which is a lovely addition. It offers a selection of locally made souvenirs, snacks, and other items, allowing travelers to take home a piece of Meghalaya’s charm. The shop is well-stocked and reasonably priced, making it a convenient stop for gifts or keepsakes.

Ambiance and Location

Set amidst the scenic beauty of Cherrapunji, the restaurant boasts a clean and inviting atmosphere. Large windows let you enjoy the surrounding greenery while you dine, adding to the overall experience. Its location near popular tourist spots makes it an ideal pitstop for travelers.

Value for Money

With its delicious food, excellent service, and added conveniences like the tuck shop, Orange Roots offers fantastic value for money. The prices are reasonable, and the quality and quantity of food make it worth every penny.

Final Thoughts

Orange Roots Restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it’s a complete experience. From the delicious vegetarian food to the courteous staff and the charming tuck shop, everything about this place reflects thoughtfulness and care. It’s a must-visit for anyone traveling through Meghalaya.

Orange Roots, Near Emisoba Homestay (Shillong) Orange Roots is a vegetarian restaurant that’s often overhyped as a classy dining spot. Yes, the ambience is clean and the place looks decent — but beyond that, it feels more like a money-driven setup than a hospitality-driven restaurant. The staff seem trained to look at guests as walking ATMs rather than customers to be served with warmth.

They use walkie-talkies to communicate — not so much for efficiency, but seemingly to monitor how much each guest is being served, ensuring that no extra servings slip through.

They advertise an “unlimited thali,” but honestly, it’s anything but unlimited. Paneer, desserts, and other premium items are deliberately delayed with excuses like “it’s being prepared fresh,” until you eventually lose your appetite. Only dal, sabji, rice, and roti are refilled — and that too with noticeable delays, forcing you to wait mid-meal. At ₹290–₹360 per thali, getting just two small pieces of paneer feels unfair, especially when almost everything else is charged as extra.

The restaurant follows a prepaid system — you first pay at the counter, get a token, have your kids “checked” for height, and then get seated. During busy hours, expect to stand outside in a queue since entry is restricted until a table becomes available.

What truly left a bad taste, though, was their child pricing policy. Charges are based on height, not age, and there’s no clear mention of it anywhere. A six-year-old was charged ₹100 for a single roti, while another child was billed the full ₹360 for just two rotis because he was “tall enough.” This arbitrary and money-minded rule felt downright unfair and insensitive.

Highlights Clean ambience Overpriced for what’s offered Misleading “unlimited” thali concept Unfair child pricing policy Poor value for money

Final Verdict

Visit Orange Roots only if ambience matters more to you than fairness or value. For a genuine meal and better hospitality — especially if you’re dining with kids — there are many smaller restaurants nearby that serve with warmth, honesty, and care. The unfriendly attitude towards children was honestly...

We were on our trip to north east so we searched online for a good restaurant this place came up with so many good reviews so we thought of trying this restaurant for lunch. Here is a detailed review of the place.

  1. Location: It is very conveniently located just at the entrance of cherrapunjee when you come from shillong side. There was lot of vehicle standing outside and it was really crowded.
  2. Menu: Now this place only serves veg thalis of two types deluxe and premium. They also serves snacks and col drinks like lassi, dosa etc. you have to pre pay the amount and take the receipt inside to get seated in a dining hall.
  3. Service: The worst part of this restaurant I think they d not know how to handle big crowds with so many reviews I thought there service will be good but it was the worst and all haywire though they were only serving pre-plated thalis.
  4. Food: The food was hot, had a homemade taste but was not as good as the review suggested after a while we felt like it was a mistake dependng on the reviews. To top that though it is written you have unlimited Thalis but if you want extra bowl of palak paneer or even one more papad you have to pay extra cost. 5)Cleanliness: Though the restaurant looked clean there bathrooms were horrible but I do not blame the staff for this as I saw it was more of the crowds lack of personal hygiene responsible for the mayhem caused inside the bathrooms with pan stains and rubbish all over the place.
  5. Overall: It was a mixed experience as we were really hungry from all the roaming around we ate a lot so maybe if the place was less crowded we might have had a good experience. Do try yourself and let me know how was your experience...
