Today I'm at @threelittlebirdsmawlai trying out their very interesting Pork Dosa. This is the third time that I've come here this year for this. The last two times that I came it was closed.
This is the same spot where Homely Hut Restaurant was located & I would often visit it more than a decade ago.
It was during COVID time when I saw a few South Indian young chaps dine here trying out the Pork Dosa & posting it on YouTube. I was intrigued ever since. Firstly since Dosa is my favourite vegetarian dish & these guys made it better by serving it with Pork. Being a tribal north eastern guy, Pork is Bae.
I remember I did come here once to try it about 4 years ago but they'd ran out of Pork & so I had the normal Masala Dosa. So it's been on my list ever since. This time I was hopeful that I would have more luck. I enquired as soon as I stepped inside this little cozy wooden cabin & was delighted when they said that they had it.
We took a step to the lower portion of the restaurant & though the ambience had a Relaxing Reggae vibe to it, the overall feel to the place was still homely. We reached at a time when the rain was pouring cats & dogs & so the restaurant was empty & we had the entire place to ourselves.
Apart from Pork Dosa, there were options for Chicken, Egg, Masala, Plain etc. My friend didn't want to risk it & ordered the normal Masala Dosa. I asked for a Fresh Lime Juice as well.
Anyway was my half a decade wait worth it? The order took 10mins. The dosa looked really good. It looked so much more better than what I had a few years ago. It was pretty big & thin. It came with a portion of minced pork, sambhar, tomato & coconut chutney. I took a bite of the dosa & it was crispy. Very nice. Proper Udupi style Dosa unlike the Chicken Curry Dosa from Potbelliez which is more like a Tamil/Malyali set dosa which uses its thickness to absorb the curry or like the Chicken Dry Dosa from Inside Out which is a decent Dosa but still not as crispy as this. My thoughts is that the thicker dosa is best with curries & the Udupi style Dosa works well with the drier meat items. The Pork was basically minced pork & it was cooked very well. It didn't have much spices but was seasoned very well. The pork meat itself did not have the skin so was not tough & rubbery. It was basically lean meat & some fat to give it more flavor. I could eat this pork with almost anything. The sambar was also very nice, and mind you I'm not a big fan of sambar but this I could tell was not from a packet & was cooked from scratch with carrots squash & other vegetables. The coconut chutney & tomato chutney were as good as any south Indian restaurant I've eaten in town. To me this combination resulted in something special, something I've not had in a while. Anyway I did try the potato masala from the Masala Dosa as well & it was also pretty good & authentic. And imagine I'm eating a proper meal sized non vegetarian dish for just 130 bucks. The Masala Dosa is also just 90. For you who consider pork too sanctified for a Dosa, well they do offer a Chicken Dosa as well for 10 bucks less. This dish to me is a very smart & well calculated move considering the number of priests from the Don Bosco Museum & from the church who are from South India & who obviously are not vegetarians. I finished my meal by gulping down
the salty-sweet fresh lemon juice. It was refreshing but I would have preferred a little less sugar. By the time we finished, the rain had stopped & the place was filled with customers, infact there were two groups who were already in que waiting for us to vacate our table. So this place is definitely very popular & I think it doesn't need foodbloggers like me, but then I just enjoy covering places such as these.

Read moreA peaceful hang-out in one of my favorite cities, I chanced upon Three Little Birds Bistro as I was passing through Shillong on a motorcycle ride. I didn't expect such a pleasant experience going in exhausted. Julian, a biker himself, asked me to make myself comfortable and rest for as long as I wanted. We sat sipping tea and exchanging stories from the road. I liked the laidback vibe, tasteful wall art, and creative dosa varieties that seemed to be a fusion of South Indian and North East Indian cuisines. I highly recommend this place just down the road from Don Bosco museum, another...
Read moreIncredible experience. Very local atmosphere. When we arrived (group of 5) they immediately prepared a table for us, even if the place was busy as several local high school students were finishing lunch. We ordered various types of chow, soups and chowmien, which were all delicious (both veg and non-veg). The highlight of the meal was definitely the big (pork) momo and the wonton suop. Staff was super friendly and atmosphere was immaculate....
