This review is based on my multiple visits to this place over the years & not just based on a single visit. This place is just a few years older than me & has been around since 1963. Yes it is a place that is more than six decades old. Having lived & grown up in the vicinity it has been a regular place for eating Maharashtrian food (vegetarian & non- vegetarian). I love the non veg food here for its freshness of the fish & meat dishes. We are regular visitors to this place & the taste of food is a benchmark for us when eating fish at other places. The entrance to this restaurant is not very easy to locate & appears unpleasant. The staircase to go up is very narrow but you will not have the same impression once you reach in. The restaurant is well lit with two dining areas. A non AC section & a 20 seater AC section. The ambience is like a vintage eatery. The seats are basic wooden benches with laminate. You may have to share the table with others. The staff is very prompt and efficient in their service. The proprietor Mr. Galwankar, is Kudaldeshkar Gaud Sararwat from Sindhudurg district but the food served is Bhandari style in preparation & flavour just as it was in the old Bhandari community owned khanavals (eateries) spread all over Mumbai city. The taste is authentic Malvani style food without any type of fusion. A word of caution is that go early to avoid waiting in a queue especially on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday as it is jam packed. Food is served always piping hot. All fish curries are rustic, prepared & ready to be served with hardly any waiting time after placing the order. Menu has a wide range of options like Surmai thali, prawns thali, Pomfret thali, Mutton thali and Chicken thali. The Tisarya masala, Mori (Baby Shark) masala are loved by me. Crab Sukha is excellent. It is crab cooked & dried in a pan with dryish thick masala which is spicy yet the taste of crabs comes through distinctly along with the taste of the crab flesh. Another favourite is the prawns. Normally they have medium size sea prawns. The aroma of the prawns curry is amazing . The curry is a bit spicy on its own but does not seem to be so when had with rice or any chapati/bhakri/wadey without losing the flavour of the prawns . All the thalis are accompanied with an additional bowl of red coconut based gravy. The gravy has a creamy texture due to fine grinding on the stone grinder with perfect blend of spices and fresh coconut. The chapati, the Tandlachi Bhakri (rice flour flat bread) & the Malvani Wadey (mixed grains fried bread) are the perfect accompaniment to the gravies. You get a distinctly different taste in each of their gravy dishes. The fish is always fresh, well marinated and cooked to perfection. The fried fish items have coating of a thin batter on it & are deep fried, hence dry without any excess oil dripping from it which is the case in the shallow fried items. The green coconut chatni which is served as an accompaniment along with food in the thali is very tasty & I cannot resist the temptation to ask for another helping of it. They always give raw onions irrespective of the price of the onions. No cabbage salad is provided for cutting costs. Kokam/Soal kadhi is flavourful, refreshing & very well balanced. It is just perfect the way I like it to be, not to spiced nor too sweetish or sour.
I have always walked out from Satkar with immense gratification & flavour on the tongue which I savour until the next visit.
AVOID : But please don't try the biryani here. They don't know how to make it. It is a disaster. The biryani is nothing but overcooked rice tossed in mutton/chicken gravy. It is nowhere close to a proper biryani with separate long grains of rice with meat pieces coated with masala.
PARKING :
For those who may be thinking about parking space, you can park your vehicle in the pay & park in the basement of Anupam cinema which is 2 minutes away. This can be the best way to sort your...
Read moreMy wife and I dined here in April 2022. It's located in the old settlement of Goregaon East just outside the train station. The entrance to the restaurant is thru a back alley. The place is small and seating is tight. However, it's clean. There isn't much to the ambience because that's not their value prop.
Over to food, they serve chicken, mutton, and seafood with a Malwani twist. We ordered fried prawns, a prawns platter, and a mutton platter. Fried prawns were mid-sized, lightly breaded, and flavorful. The catch was fresh as the prawns didn't smell.
The prawns platter had two prawns preps, a side of fried prawns, bread, rice, and sol kadi. The gravy and dry prep had a nice coconuty flavor with just the right balance of spice and tang. We ordered vadas (bread) which were mid sized, well fried, and crispy. Cooked white rice was cooked just right and the portion size was sufficient for 1 person.
Over to the mutton platter, there were two preps, a side, salad, vadas (bread), rice, sol kadi, and a dessert. The boneless to bone-in proportion of meat was balanced. Meat portions were sufficient, unlike many other restaurants in Mumbai. Mutton was well cooked such that it was falling off the bone. Sol kadi portion could have been better; however, the flavor made up for the small portion. Dessert was average, but I won't hold it against them because it's not their core offering.
In summary, the portion sizes of the platters and the variety was modest to good. Flavors were on point; they didn't skimp on the meat/sea food portions (key winning point); the prep is as close to home cooked as it can get; and the pricing is modest. If you live in western 'burbs, drop by for lunch/dinner and you won't regret it.
Just a recommendation: Avoid showing up at peak hours or holidays because the wait time can stretch up to 1 hour. Yes! People queue up for as long as an hour...

Located in a tiny lane in goregao, just opposite to goregao station on east side. Malavani food is what they are specialised in and since 1963. It is one of my most favourite restaurants to visit whenever i am craving for a good malavani food. They have AC and non AC sections. Menu is really vast and you can get different taste in each of their dishes. Try mutton and fish as that’s what they are specialised in. The chutney which they give with food is super delicious too, a must try i am sure you will order it more and more.
• Pomfret fry- Super fresh fish slightly marinated and shallow fried to the perfection. As soon as we had the first bite we loved it and didn’t stop till it got finished.
• Surmai Fry- Nice and thick slice of surmai shallow fried and served with the in house made delicious chutney. • Mutton Wade- Who can miss this when you are in malwani restaurant. Always prefer with bone mutton so that can enjoy the true flavour of it. Curry cut mutton cooked in semi thick gravy and served with crispy and puffed wade.
• Tisrya(Mussels) Thali- Mussels cooked in thick onion gravy and served with your choice of maharashtrian bread (Chapati, Wade, Bhakri) along with a fish gravy bowl, chutney and sliced onions. Truly heaven is what i can say about this dish.
To sum up, certainly can say the food what they offer is extremely fresh(Especially fish) and super delicious. Always try to have one fish fry and then thali or even mutton sukha or liver is exciting here. Surely would try mutton liver next time as we were full once we finished the thali. Strongly recommend to those who never had or truly love...
