I’ve been visiting Paul’s since 2015. Uncle at the reception has always been the heart of this place, greeting everyone with a warm smile and his retro jazz playlist in the background. It’s a cozy little spot tucked away in a calm lane, with only four tables, so waiting is common on busy days.
Their tandoori has always been my favorite, but my recent visit was disappointing. The tandoori was very dry, and the pieces were unusually small (almost quail-sized). Uncle wasn’t around this time. I think his son was managing the counter and payments. Unfortunately, his attitude was nothing like Uncle’s.
When we politely mentioned that the fried noodles were mixed into the Manchow soup instead of being served separately, his response was arrogant and dismissive. My father, a senior citizen, spoke very kindly, yet the reply we got was, “If you’ve been coming for years, you should know this or tell it in advance before ordering.” I mean, how would we know you’d suddenly start doing that?
The waiting staff, though polite, seemed nervous; probably because of how he runs things. When we asked for extra onions or lemon, they looked hesitant, like it was too much to ask. For a North Indian restaurant, onions should be served generously. Even if you charge for them, don’t make customers feel awkward asking.
The portion sizes have also reduced a lot. If you’re a foodie, expect to order double. On a positive note, they still serve good ardy drinks in different flavors if that’s your thing.
Still, I want to thank Uncle for all the warmth and kindness he’s shown over the years. His genuine hospitality is what made Paul’s special. I just hope that spirit doesn’t fade away when...
