There are only two types of people the world according to a foodie – a Tea Lover and a Coffee Addict. While you find most of the coffee addicts in the southern part of India, there are a lot of Tea Lovers spread across the country. Especially in the north, where the mercury hits rock bottom during winters, Tea or Chai is probably the only way of survival. Driving my scooter, crossing the Gomti River in the heavy fog, my hands were numb. I was just hoping to reach one of the most famous Tea joint in Lucknow at the earliest. A small shop in the posh Hazratganj area, opposite to the famous Novelty Cinema is the famous Sharma Ji Ki Chai or Sharma Tea Stall whatever you would like to call. Sharma Ji Ki Chai isn’t the typical breakfast restaurant that serves the elegant continental breakfast. Also, if you are expecting it to be a huge restaurant then you will be disappointed. As the name says, this is a just a small tea stall that is flocked by hundreds in the morning hours. From young students discussion college to retired uncles talking demonetization, there’s a lot of gyaan you get along with the chai. The best way to reach is to take left from Capoor’s Hotel in Hazratganj towards the computer market. You’ll come across a small car parking area on your left, take that left (yes the footpath type road) go straight and you would find the stall on your right. The tea stall has a very small and tidy menu – not more than 6 items to offer. Sharma Ji Ki Chai offers chai in three variants – the Kulhad Chai priced at Rs 20, the Thermacol glass chai priced at Rs 15 and the normal Chai priced at Rs 10. Even though the way of serving chai is changing, the tea is the same. I was expecting different varieties of chai – something like Masala Chai, Ginger Tea etc. but there wasn’t anything like that. Apart from chai, Sharma Ji Ki Chai serves the famous Bun Maska (Bun and Butter) along with Samosa. Moving to the taste, the Bun Maska is delicious. They use a sweet bun along with a salted butter, that creates awesome flavors. Priced at Rs 20, the Maska Bun is something that I would definitely eat whenever I’m there. The samosa here is special too. Unlike the regular pyramid shape, these samosas are round and are served hot. There is a separate area down the street where they make samosas, so it might take a while to refill. Coming to the all important Chai at Sharma Ji Ki Chai, I was disappointed. Being known for something and not keeping it upto the mark, isn’t good. The tea here is watery and lacks the punch in my opinion. Even though I’m not a tea addict, I’ve tried the chai at various places like Ahmedabad, Delhi, Hyderabad etc. and have always got a creamy, tasty tea. There was a sharp taste of elaichi (cardamom) but that didn’t make things better. All in all the tea is average, not something I would go there for. The famous Sharma Ji Ki Chai is endorsed by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism department, so you can imagine the importance of the tea stall. This is a perfect place for a quick bite and hot chai before leaving for work or school. The Bun Maska was my favorite and I literally had 3 of those. Samosa was hot and spicy and packed a punch. However, the all important chai was a big let down. The tea doesn’t has the kick that would charge you up for the entire day. Overall, it was a good visit considering the dipping mercury levels here. Sharma Ji Ki Chai deserves a visit when you are in Lucknow.

Nice shop of this place. Famous lucknow tea shop... :-- ABOUT --: **One of the Best Tea Stall in Lucknow Sharma Ji Ki Chai is a very famous and old tea center in Lucknow known for it’s chai, bun makhan (churned white butter), bun samosa and gol samosa along with mathri, suhal and mithai. The tea stall is very pocket friendly and offers fast service to its customers. Tea and snacks items are priced reasonably. Sharma Ji Ki Chai serves only vegetarian items. One of the best tea shops in Lucknow is centrally located and very near to the famous Hazratganj market. The tea stall is a bit crowded on Sundays and holidays and there is no place to sit but still you will find regular customers hogging tea and bun makhan. It is a place where you can see all sections of society at one place, rich or poor both. You can have chai in Kulhad (clay cup) or a paper cup. Everywhere you will find triangle samosa but here at Sharma Ji Ki Chai you will get gol/round samosa. **History, Founder & Owner of Sharma Ji Ki Chai Lucknow The tea stall was founded by Shri Om Prakash Sharma in 1949. He was native of Aligarh. Sharma Ji Ki Chai shop is 70 years old and is now in its third generation. Deepak Sharma son of Om Prakash Sharma is the owner of Sharma Ji Ki Chai. The tea stall is also managed by the grandson of Shri Om Prakash Sharma. Manav Sharma is the third generation of the Sharma family who is taking the legacy of his grandfather forward. Sharma Ji Ki Chai was visited by big politicians like former PM Shri Atal ji, former UP CMs Kalyan Singh & Rajnath Singh and was also visited by Raj Babbar, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Many TV and Bollywood celebrities like Sanjeev Kapoor, Rajnesh, Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday had also visited the tea stall on their visit to Lucknow. **Sharma Tea Stall Opening Closing Time Sharma Ji Ki Chai opening time is 8:00 am and closing time is 7:00pm from Monday to Sunday.

Sharma Ji Ki Chai in Lucknow is celebrated not just for its tea but also for its ambiance that captures the essence of Lucknow's street food culture. The chai shop, located in Lalbagh, is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, renowned for its signature brews served in traditional clay cups. The place is particularly famous for its masala chai which is richly spiced and deeply comforting. Besides chai, their samosas and bun makkhan are also highly recommended, offering the perfect snack combination to complement the tea. Patrons appreciate the consistent quality of the tea and the warmth of the small, cozy setup that has been serving for over 50 years. It's a place where tea enthusiasts gather not just for the taste but also for the experience of enjoying street-side tea in an authentic setting. Despite its simplicity, the charm of Sharma Ji Ki Chai lies in its history and the legacy of a family that has been running it for generations, making it a must-visit spot in Lucknow for anyone looking to savor genuine local flavors

This was my first time visiting this place in about 10 years. The environment was very nice as it is open and you can even sit in front of this place. 🌿🌱 The shortcomings are that honestly it was a lot better back then right now they are just having the benefit of their goodwill they earned earlier. ☄️ The tea was very dark and also the quantity they serve as compared to the price is little less. But the other things like samosa and bun makhan were just awesome and they actually made my day.😋🤩 Also the crowd was legit that day (Sunday morning) so it was really very difficult to order and take it as there was literally no place.🌼 But the service was real quick it was like I ordered and got the order in 5 minutes. Honestly everybody has their own taste of chai as we know that tea for Indians is like an emotion it's not just a drink.🔥 So, which I found dark you may not please visit this place if you visit Lucknow.❄️ This place has its own legacy as they have been in this business for more than 3 decades. 🌈

When your local Lucknow expert - Ankisha - tells you to visit Sharma Ji Ki Chai before 7 AM, I thought it was hyped. Walked it down to the place, and saw the eager crowd waiting for long - even before the magical Chai was ready by 07:15. As soon as the Chai was ready you could hear murmurs from the crowd "Chai ban gayi, Chai ban gayi". For someone who has had Chai from around the place, this new found religion of Chai worshippers appeared questionable.. Till I took my first sip from the kullad. Children, if you visit Lucknow, do enroll in this religious practice to be cleansed of the lovely kebabs of the last night and be ready to start the day again! The samosa and poha is worthy of a mention, piping hot and just the right mash of peas and potato in a very earthy masala in the samosa VS a large dash of lemon, two types of sev, onion and poha with a very mild tadka. Personally, the maska bun was a slight let down, maybe coz my local Irani Chai wala at Mumbai makes the bun maska better :)
