🥘 We t there with aome friends. This was our first experience at Hakkaland, an Indo-chinese restaurant in London founded by Chef Steven Lee from Kolkata.
We ordered the following Taipei Chicken Kolkata Chilli Chicken Hunan Chicken Kolkata Special Fried Rice Chicken Hakka Noodle Chicken Teppan Soba Noodle
Taipei Chicken - This was my fav item. The flavours were well balanced with a mix of umami, sweet and sharp tangy flavours. The meat was juicy and well cooked. The green and red peppers had the right texture and crunch that I love without getting soggy and the dried red chillies 🌶 added the right amount of kick.
Kolkata Chili Chicken - Their signature dish. It was good and close but didn’t blew me away. I felt the seasoning in the dry sauce could have been better. The coating was thin which I liked as I hate restaurants where you get a chunky coating of cornstarch and a rather sad looking soyabean sized chicken piece inside.
Hunan Chicken - This one was below average and I would suggest avoiding it. The gravy was watery and tasteless.
Kolkata Special Fried Rice - Taste wise, this was very good and reminded me of good Kolkata style fried rice. The thing I did not like about this was not the taste rather it was hard to find chicken and shrimps and just rice. We could have played ‘find the chicken and shrimp’ contest all evening without anyone winning 😁.
Chicken Hakka Noodle - Well, I had high hopes but this was a bland hakka noodle and far from what you get in decent places.
Chicken Teppan Soba Noodle - I liked it slightly better than the Hakka Noodle. However, It was not really a proper Teppan Soba Noddle as it was essentially the same Hakka Noodle tossed with herbs and vegetable in garlic butter in a sizzler tray. Soba noodles are made from buckwheat with a nuttier taste and sesame oil helps to lift the flavours and this was not what it said which is...
