The real calling of this place is this retro vibe which us consistently maintained in every aspect from the name to the country cabin interiors, the pictures of classic western and indian musicians in the wall and the coal tin fireplace. One would typically expect such a cafe in a bustling tourist place where theme and attitude would be a major draw beyond the actual food. A themed cafe was a surprise in the sleepy tranquil hill hamlet of Lepcha jagat where you wouldn't even find a basic restaurant. The few eateries that exist are stalls or canteens with benches dishing out tea/coffee and comfort food like noodles and momos.
A board inviting us to "get warm in the fire inside" is what drew us to this place in the freezing year end evening. While we had trouble finding the entrance, we soon solved the conundrum and made our way into this offbeat log cabin with incandescent lights and a lone person rubbing his hands over a can of burning coal. An improvised chimney was made of a smaller tin can. This person was the one managing, the cash counter, the kitchen and the tables. He greeted us and mouthed a limited menu as the menu cards weren't back from printing. The cafe had just started a few days back. As the person took our order and went into the kitchen to make it we took to the promised fire. A LED TV playing out bollywood numbers from spotify through a speaker in full volume was the only element of modernity in a decor dominated by bamboo walls, bamboo mat roofs, unevenly cut wooden slab desks, black and white/sepia photographs of old artists, an acoustic guitar, an old dial phone and most interestingly a Maruti omni front fascia for the cash counter.
We had ordered just a soup which was well made. The hot soup with spices warmed up our shivering bodies. The aroma of the spring onions and herbs was pleasing. Pricing is reasonable. As we had our food, the owners entered and told us about how everything was made from reused or discarded material. The owners run the nearby green valley homestay which has good ratings on Google maps.
