Nasi Lengko is a vegetarian’s heaven. For those of you looking for a meaty dish, this is not the dish for you. But if you’re looking for something light and easy to eat, and if you like tofu and tempeh, this would be perfect for you!

Nasi lengko for me is the perfect combination of texture, flavor and lightness. It’s easy to finish and leaves a good aftertaste on the mouth right after. It’s basically tofu, tempeh, cucumber, fried shallots and onion all on top of white rice and topped off with Cirebon’s signature sweet soy sauce. As someone who grew up in East Java, I’m used to eating things like pecel and gado-gado, and nasi lengko is just the perfect balance of these nostalgic flavors with an added Cirebon twist.

I personally recommend eating it as breakfast or a light lunch for you to go about the rest of your day. However, if you’d like to add some meat to it, you can always pair the dish with some lamb satay to get the best of both worlds!

Just a quick word of caution that this is indeed a simple warung and not a fancy restaurant by any means, so please don’t expect the level of cleanliness that you would do in those kinds of places. But regardless, nasi lengko remains my favorite dish to eat in Cirebon.
