5:50pm on a Tuesday during Ramadan in South Jakarta.
The bartenders and wait staff are breaking their Ramadan fast together, chatting together, clearly happy, under the heavy din of 60s, 70s, and 80s classic rock. They are enthusiastically eating rice and chicken and ground hot peppers with their hands. They are in the chic bar uniforms made to look like they are not uniforms. One short skinny girl with colored hair and cosmetic blue iris contacts is wearing a T-shirt that says, "Good girls deserve presents." A moment before, this was the dark corner of the bar where the waitresses would bring orders to the bartenders. For a brief moment, at just this moment, until the next order comes, this is a sacred space. They are breaking fast. I feel like I am invading. I am sitting two seats down from them, finished with my burger, working on my 3rd beer. On the wall is the Ramadan special: Pork Bites for 50k on Tuesdays. Pints of Bintang Beer 55k before 8pm. There is an oblivious 30-something white woman, probably an international school teacher, sitting alone on the other side of the bar, smiling into her brand new Apple laptop opened next to a full pint of unpronounceable German beer in one of those tall fancy glasses that has the beer's brand on it. Behind me is a quiet but drunk quorum of Scottish oilmen at a table, enjoying happy hour. The bar is dark. No one speaks a word of Arabic. No prayers are audible. There is muted English football on the TV. At the moment, "Just Another Manic Monday" seems to be playing through the dozen or so overhead speakers. I quietly mention Assalamu Walaikum to them, and Iftar Mubarak. They look at me confused. I repeat in the local language: Selamat Buka Puasa. They say thank you, and ask if I want another...

Read moreOne group with double doors. Located in Pondok Indah area. Easy to find, they have a huge signage so we can easily spot the place. They have a big parking space, but It's not that spacious inside, with nice concept, great atmosphere, and minimal lighting. You can enjoy live music every weekend (night time). They have wide range of drinks selection to choose from. One funny thing is, they serve our guinness beer not with a regular beer-glass that we used to see and drink from, but with a hot-chocolate glass, a.k.a white ceramic mug. The food here is quite good, and the price is not that expensive. The staffs are also nice....
