I enjoy the food here, even it is a simple but it offers a range of traditional Batak dishes. The main choices are seperated into two distinctive groups: fish and meat. Fish has a limited choice as the sole preparation is the “arsik” style. This means, fish is cooked with various spices -which most are limited to the northern Sumatra region- like a local pepper named andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium) and a specific shallot named bawang batak or lokio (Allium schoenoprasum). The meat group is basically pork dishes, either cooked or grilled. The grilled one is called “panggang” is served with the andaliman mixed chilli paste. The cooked one is prepared in a traditional way, named saksang, which involves cooking the meat with local spices and blood. All dishes are accompanied with steamed rice.
