Restaurant Review: Zanas, Jakarta
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Nestled in the heart of Jakarta, Zanas is an Indian restaurant that promises an authentic culinary journey. My recent visit there was a mixed bag of delightful flavors and disappointing service.
Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the food. I indulged in the butter chicken curry paired with naan, and both dishes were exceptional. The curry was rich and creamy, with a perfect balance of spices, while the naan was soft and freshly baked. Complementing the meal was a refreshing mango lassi and a warm cup of tea, which added a comforting touch to the dining experience. Additionally, we were pleasantly surprised with complimentary chips, a small gesture that was appreciated and added to the authenticity of the experience.
Atmosphere: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The ambiance at Zanas was warm and inviting. The cozy setup provided a comfortable and relaxing environment, ideal for enjoying a leisurely meal. The décor, with its subtle Indian accents, added to the overall charm of the place, making it a pleasant spot to unwind and savor the delicious food.
Service: ⭐☆☆☆☆
Despite the excellent food and atmosphere, the service at Zanas left much to be desired. While waiting for our food and drinks, I decided to nibble on the complimentary chips, which unfortunately caused me to choke and cough. Desperately needing a sip of water, I reached for my own bottle, as our drinks had yet to arrive. This is where the experience took a turn for the worse. The waiter, instead of showing concern for my wellbeing, appeared panicked and reprimanded me for bringing outside drinks, emphasizing the restaurant’s policy against it. While I understand the importance of such rules, the lack of empathy and concern in that moment was disheartening. This incident cast a shadow over what could have been an enjoyable dining experience.
In conclusion, Zanas has the potential to be a top choice for Indian cuisine in Jakarta, thanks to its delightful food and cozy atmosphere. However, the service needs significant improvement to ensure customers feel welcome and cared for. Until then, the experience remains bittersweet, warranting a modest...
Read moreWe are non Indians. This resto used to be my wife's fav resto years even before pandemi (dine in and GoFood during pandemi) and she always recommends this resto to our friends n family to try Indian food. Even tonight we invited our friends to have dinner here. We are the only table of non Indians. The rest are Indians to give u context.
However tonight we faced unhospitality and a bit racist from the restaurant owner/supervisor. My wife ordered masalah tea and its too thick that she drank a bit of water from her water bottle. Suddenly one staff approach us and told us off that we cannot drink drink from outside, embarrassed us in front of our friends. The owner (person behind the cashier) told her staff to tell us off. When we said to the staff that the other table also has water bottle, why they pick on us not the other table (all Indians) he said it's okay because that table has a child. Later on we see that particular other table also Starbucks (already half empty, I regret not quick enough to take photo) but the owner (the one that behind the cashier) either the waiter did not say anything just because they are Indians. =)
We truly regrets to invite our friends to have dinner here tonight to get such unpleasant and a bit racist treatment. I believe the Staff is only do what he is told to do by the Indian owner/supervisor (or whoever female Indian behind the cashier).
It is surely very good practice to ensure that only INDIAN will get treated with respect and hospitality in here. If you do not believe me, just try it for yourself. Just go to the Indian resto next door, Udupi with better...

The other indian customer bring water bottle or drink starbucks in front of cashier but its okay for the restaurant staff or owner. But if you are not indian, they will approach you and make you feel embarrassed in front of your friends, even though the each party in the table already order the drink. I ordered masala tea and its too thick for me, therefore i drink a bit of water from the water bottle and got told off by the staff (restaurant owner or supervisor told the staff to tell me off).
If you are not Indian, be ready to face different (a bit racist) treatment from the owner or staff (the owner told the staff to told me). I have come to this restaurant 3-4 times even during pandemic and recommend this place and always bring my water bottle, this is my first time experiench such unpleasantness n unfairness (racism) from the restaurant.
I rather go to Udupi, the Indian Restaurant...
