Aula Simfonia Jakarta is a 1200-capacity concert hall in Kemayoran, Jakarta, Indonesia.

It is part of the Reformed Millennium Center Indonesia development, a development consisting of a megachurch, art gallery, library, school and theological college. Its principal conductor and artistic director is an Indonesian Reformed Evangelical Church evangelist, Stephen Tong.

Aula Simfonia Jakarta officially opened in 2009, established without any funding from the government. Both local and international musicians have performed in this hall.

Aula Simfonia Jakarta is dominated by brown tones with different types of wood finishes, surrounded by paintings of celebrated composers and varied statues representing well-known musical instruments, illuminated by a crystal chandelier over the center stage.

This concert hall has never required any use of speakers during live music performances. Its layout and design were carefully made with a strategically layered ceiling to amplify the sound, as well as filtering out excess noise to achieve the rarely-accomplished 35 dB (decibels).

The pipe organ is one of the oldest musical instruments with the most intricately-made components in the world. Aula Simfonia Jakarta possesses a Cassavant Freres production from 1962 with 3217 pipes, with a total weight of more than 10 tons. The hall was opulent and I really loved the acoustics - it sounds intimate but not too dry even with a 1,200 capacity. Oh, and the audience knows not to applaud between movements, which is impressive these days.

Now Dr Tong is not exactly an orchestral clinician and the playing left much to be desired. The orchestra sounded completely different and tighter under Maestro Jahja Ling, while one could tell that Dr Tong is getting on in years.

The weakest link is the Horn section. They ruined Beethoven’s 6th and played as if Beethoven’s notes were a mere suggestion. The winds sound good but could do with more sectionals. The concertmistress was trying her utmost to hold the strings together but the intonation could sometimes crash and burn.

However Dr Tong is a force of nature. I can surmise that the orchestral music scene would not have even existed in Indonesia had it not for Dr Tong’s tireless lifetime dedication. I could tell, by his lectures prior to the symphonies, and his expressing his disappointment towards latecomers in between movements, that he will not stop educating people on the joy of music till his last breath.

Value for money tickets? No. One can attend a Singapore Symphony concert for much less and with far greater technical excellence. But Dr Tong’s concert is an occasion, not merely a calendar entry. A...
