Biji Hitam Coffee Shop — Restaurant in North Sumatra

Probably the best coffee available in Berastagi. Tucked away in a quiet street is this hip and retro cafe serving locally sourced coffees from neighboring farms. We arrived soaking wet as we were caught in the rain but the owner and team at the shop made us feel very much at home despite them being very busy (the owner offered to let us warm our hands with the espresso machine and that was very polite). We only had drinks and found the prices to be very affordable for a decent menu offering espresso and filter based coffee. The coffee roasting process also takes place within the premise so customers get to be part of the experience through sight and smells. We had such a great time and enjoyed the good company. This coffee shop in Berastagi is an absolute gem! The coffee selection is impressive. I tried the iced Americano, which was pleasantly balanced, not too bitter, with a delightful aroma. The mocha latte was a standout with its strong chocolate flavor, and the sparkling lemon coffee was refreshing and special. Their fried cassava was yummy too.

The coffee shop is located upstairs, you can choose to enjoy your coffee on the balcony for scenic views or inside for a cozier experience. Seating is limited due to its small size and there's only one small toilet available.

This is an awesome coffee shop with traditional setting, tastefully designed, off from the main road in Brastagi. The owners are very friendly, so passionate and skillful. We really enjoy all our drinks from espresso based, manual brew and also their snacks menu. They get their raw coffee beans direct from the farmers from surrounding areas, and roasting is done at the shop. Definitely one of the most memorable and high quality cup of joe we have come across.
