Soto Gading Solo 1 – A Local Legend Worth Visiting (4/5 Stars)
If you’re in Solo and want to experience a taste of local culinary heritage, Soto Gading 1 is a name that comes up time and time again. Located near the Kraton (royal palace), this modest eatery has become an icon for both locals and tourists seeking an authentic bowl of Javanese-style soto. After hearing countless recommendations, I finally visited—and I can say the reputation is well-earned, though with a few minor caveats.
The Ambiance: Simple, Busy, and Authentic
Don’t expect luxury or modern interiors when you come here. Soto Gading 1 is all about simplicity—plastic chairs, wooden tables, and an open-air setting. It has the feel of a bustling warung that’s been around for decades, filled with the sounds of chatting patrons and the clatter of bowls and cutlery. There’s no air conditioning, but the atmosphere is vibrant and full of character. It’s not fancy, but it’s real—and that’s part of the charm.
The Soto: Light, Flavorful, and Uniquely Solo
Now let’s talk about the star of the show: the soto itself. Soto Gading serves soto ayam bening, a clear chicken soup that’s subtly seasoned but incredibly comforting. The broth is light and aromatic, with hints of garlic and lemongrass. It’s served with shredded chicken, soft rice, vermicelli, and a bit of fried shallots on top. You can also customize it with lime, sambal, or sweet soy sauce depending on your taste.
What I loved most was how clean and delicate the flavors were. It’s not overpowering or spicy by default, making it suitable for all palates. While it may not be the richest or most complex soto I’ve ever had, there’s something undeniably nostalgic and satisfying about the simplicity of this bowl.
The Sides: Tempting and Tasty
Soto Gading 1 also offers a variety of side dishes laid out on the table: perkedel (potato patties), sate usus (chicken intestine skewers), sate telur puyuh (quail eggs), fried tempeh, and more. These are the perfect complements to your soto and add layers of flavor and texture to your meal. Be careful though—it’s easy to over-indulge, and everything is priced individually!
Service and Speed: Efficient and Friendly
Despite the crowd, service was quick. The staff are used to high volume and keep everything moving smoothly. My order arrived within minutes, and the wait staff were polite and efficient. It’s a self-serve vibe in some aspects, but very organized.
Final Thoughts
Soto Gading 1 is a must-try culinary stop if you’re exploring Solo. The food is affordable, authentic, and rooted in tradition. While it doesn’t offer fancy surroundings or bold flavors, it delivers on what it promises: a comforting, time-tested bowl of soto that represents the soul of the city.
I’m giving it 4 stars simply because while it’s great, it might not wow every first-timer, especially if you’re expecting strong flavors or upscale settings. But for what it is—a humble, legendary local eatery—it...
