Situated in Cokrodiningratan, Yogyakarta, Backyard Smoke and Buns delivers a distinctive and satisfying culinary experience that marries the charm of outdoor dining with the rich flavors of smoked and grilled cuisine.

We began our meal with the Meltique Sirloin Steak, ordered medium rare, served with coleslaw, polenta, and mushroom sauce. The steak, a 200-gram slice of perfection, was juicy and tender, melting in the mouth. The mushroom sauce enhanced the steak’s savory profile with a rich, earthy depth. Our first encounter with polenta proved delightful; its creamy yet slightly crispy texture perfectly balanced the steak.

Next, we tried the Shared Platter, which featured two slider buns, 150 grams of fries, half a smoked chicken, 100 grams of smoked beef, 60 grams of Nashville chicken strips, coleslaw salad, and chimichurri and tartar sauces. The slider buns were a pleasant surprise, delicious enough to enjoy on their own. The smoked chicken had a smoky, slightly bitter exterior but was savory with a sweet tinge inside, creating an interesting contrast.

Unfortunately, the smoked beef was a disappointment. It arrived cold and was tough, making it difficult to cut and chew. We expected tenderness and flavor from perfectly done smoked beef, but this dish fell short.

The highlights of the platter were the fries and Nashville chicken strips. The chicken strips were bursting with flavor, spicy and perfectly cooked. The fries were exceptional, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The coleslaw was also noteworthy, providing a refreshing crunch that balanced the meal and washed down the fatty aftertaste of the smoked beef.

Would we recommend Backyard? Absolutely, with a note of caution regarding the smoked beef. The quality and flavor of the other dishes, particularly the Meltique Sirloin Steak and the Shared Platter's Fries and Nashville Chicken Strips, make this place a worthy visit. . . . Edited to add We loved the Fries and Buns on yesterday's visit so much we decided to order through GrabFood for lunch today. We had Steak with Fries, and Slider Buns. Even after a lengthy delivery to our place, the steak remained delicious, and the fries retained their delightful crispiness. The Slider Buns, with their juicy patties, wonderful buns, and amazing sauce, were equally impressive. If you don't feel like going out, and you consider ordering...

TLDR; I recommend the following: Steaks 😊 Chimichurri sauce πŸ˜‹ French Fries πŸ˜‹ Coleslaw 😍 No alcohol, as this is halal friendly establishments.

Our experience: After binged eating Indonesian food for the past 3 days, we needed a break from Indonesian food and we stumbled upon this steakhouse from google map.

I ordered the Carnivore set to share with my wife.

Despite of the name, the main highlight of this set was actually the fries and the coleslaw 🀣. The fries were extremely crispy and the coleslaw was delightful πŸ˜‹

As for the meat, we opted for 200g imported steak for the sirloin cut - with medium rare doneness. It was good and juicy. I highly recommend to pair it with their chimichurri sauce. πŸ˜‹

Nothing much to comment about the sausages, it was okay-ish. πŸ™‚

For the smoked beef brisket, it was abit too tough for our likings, some cuts were ok but some were hard. But Kudos for the efforts and attempt to make it right by serving us with the replacement portion, after hearing our feedbacks 😊

Thank you Mbak Salsa / Sasa for your attentiveness and excellent customer service...

Biggest redeeming quality: service. The two hijabi ladies (saying this so you know which ones) serving us handled things very well. Very kind, and adapts well, especially during a few hiccups as shown below. But kudos to them!

Menu not up to date, actual price way higher than what we saw online. Scanned menu was also not updated. But they updated while we were there.

Brisket very chewy and dry, and the coleslaw was on the verge of going bad. I returned the coleslaw and informed them (we did not demand anything btw). First they offered a new coleslaw, which we were not interested. Then, at their initiative, they offered us an icecream slider which we accepted

Baby burger was excellent, my son (3 y/o) ate everything!

Nashville chicken was quite good, unfortunately its too contrast with Rock Burger's (Jl. Damai) Nashville Chicken Rice which (a) has same price, but has (b) much better spices, (c) jucier and (d) MUCH larger chicken, (e) comes with a sunny side up and (f) unlimited tea.

Burger sliders (the promo one with meltique) was quite good. I...

We traveled to this place from the other side of the city. The opening time is listed as 7 AM on Sundays. Initially, the staff at the counter informed us that we could order anything from the menu except for a few items. However, after finalizing our order, the staff member went to check with the chef, who then said that only items from the breakfast menu were available. There is no mention on their Google listing or in the main description of their Instagram page that they only serve breakfast on Sunday mornings. The breakfast menu had only one meat option, even though their main menu primarily consists of meat dishes. Considering we traveled such a long way early in the morning, the chef could have shown some courtesy and prepared something from the main menu, but instead, he displayed arrogance. Overall, the experience reflected very poor customer service, a lack of courtesy, and inadequate communication online.
