I visited Smyths after having a short messanger conversation regarding gluten free options. Being coeliac, I find it very hard to find restaurants (especially at the lower end of the price range) that can provide any gluten free options. Symths range of options just blew me away. I couldn't believe that I had such a wide variety to choose from, a range of nachos, salads, multiple burgers, multiple chicken burgers, fries, sweet potato fries, loaded potato skins, steak, stir fry, Thai red curry and then on top of that a choice of desserts. My only problem was that I genuinely couldn't choose what to have.
I felt very reassured that they understood the importance of cross contamination and really knew what coeliacs needed from a restaurant /takeaway as the manager is coeliac herself.
I ordered a chicken burger and a garlic chip with cheese and to say they were fantastic would be an understatement. At first I was nervous that the burger bin could not possibly be gluten free because it just seemed too fresh. I was wary of eating it but luckily my husband had also ordered a regular non gluten free burger which had an obviously different bun.
The bun was just the best gluten free burger bun that I've ever had. I thought I had tasted all of the burger buns in the market but after a quick message to Smyths I discovered that the use goodness grains burger nuns which are not available in shops where I live. I'll be placing an order online this week for some. The chips were proper chip shop chips.
My daughter, who is incredibly fussy had the hot dog and said it was the nicest dinner she has ever had.
My husband really enjoyed his burger and chips too.
It was just so nice to be able to have dinner with my family and have so much variety. I will be looking for reasons to visit cavan, just so I can try all the other bits...
Read moreI had a terrible experience with this restaurant and would not recommend it to anyone. I ordered a takeaway from Smith's today, and when I got home to eat with my family, the chicken had a strong fishy smell, which was very off-putting. My partner tasted it as well and agreed it was not right. To make matters worse, one of the chicken wings had a black hair stuck to it, which was absolutely disgusting. While the kids' meal and chips looked fine, at that stage my appetite was gone so I didn’t eat the chips or the child didn’t finish her meal either 🚮 the chicken and wings were completely inedible.
I decided to take the food back, expecting a professional response. The young lady who took my order was kind and polite, but the owner’s reaction was shockingly rude. Instead of taking responsibility, insinuated I had put the hair in the food myself and claimed none of his staff had black hair – despite one of his cooks standing right there with dark hair. His aggressive attitude made me feel very uncomfortable and disrespected.
Although I was refunded for the chicken and wings, the owner’s behavior was completely unacceptable. I would recommend finding another restaurant where cleanliness, food quality, and customer service are taken seriously. My family and I will not be returning to Smith’s after...
Read moreThe staff is very helpful, and they offer a great range of food for a reasonable price. I got the vegetarian omelette, which came with toast (or brown bread) and a tea or coffee for €12.
Delicious, filling, and a great price for all you get, given today's economy.
The waitress was a little bit forgetful (I had to remind her a coffee came with my food), but she explained to me she was training in a new staff member for the Xmas period. She was very apologetic, and it was honestly nice to get a "real" response from her. Can't fault the waitress at all. :)
One star deducted for the loud music, and for the large menu which isn't laid out very cohesively. It was hard to decide what to eat purely because there were so many distractions.
Other than that, it's a great place with nice, clean food and great value for money. Portion sizes are generous, the staff is lovely, and there are a lot of options to choose from...
