The Charter Bar & Eatery — Restaurant in The Municipal District of Portlaoise

My brother graduated from the Garda College in March and I recommend that we come here for food as when I stayed here in the past on business trips I loved the food and service. I was disappointed this time tho, I requested a nice table for 5 people and we were crammed in a small table of 4, not sure why as the bar was empty? When we entered the bar we waited where the sign requested to wait for host, we waited there for over 10 minutes and no one came, we had to go down to the bar ourselves and ask. When advising them I had a reservation you could see they didn’t know about it and shoved us on any table. We waited for a long time for the menus again I had to call a waiter over and request it. Again when finished our mains we waited over 20 minutes for them to clear our plates, again had to be requested. The staff were not friendly, and also the receptionist was not friendly either. The food was still great! It’s a shame about this experience as I wouldn’t recommend it again. I just think when you are spending hard earn money on a meal and don’t get good service and feel as if you are somewhat a nuisance to staff it leaves...

I called to order a takeout dinner for one very hungry husband!! He has a very early start on Sundays and is always ravenous when he gets home.....but, I have to go out this evening and decided to treat him to a dinner. Without trying to sound "cool"....OMG!! What a dinner!! I ordered the turkey and ham with veg, and trimmings. When I say the portions (remember the hungry husband??) were substantial, I'm not joking. From the separate containers for each portion - veg, meat, potatoes and gravy , to the delicious aroma wafting from them when opened, all I can say is one very full husband is still having about it, and we are both good cooks. Really disappointed with the service on all levels. Had to ask for our drinks twice after 45 minutes of waiting and our starters still hadn’t come either. The place wasn’t busy but was clear there was a lot of miss communication. Glasses were grubby with one even having a lipstick stain on the rim. Had to ask for our table to be cleared and for table water three times. Food was nice but one of us had to wait 10 minutes extra than the rest of our table for their main course- and it was pizza. One of us also got the wrong order and the two others at our table had to get their own cutlery as it wasn’t replaced from the time our table was eventually cleared. Drinks were poor and not worth the wait. We made it clear to various staff members we were disappointed but received no discount or offering to make amends.
