The best pizza in the world no dice As a food and beverage professional I have spent the last 30 years exploring the cuisines globally both in my work and privately. Pizza is arguably the world's most popular comfort food and it certainly ranks high for me when looking for something simple, easy and delicious. As such, I am very particular about my pizza and have only encountered a few places on this earth that had a lasting impression on me. Amongst those count 400 gradi in Melbourne, Rubirosa in NYC and Kronvalls Castle in Sweden. During my numerous travels in Italy during the last 30 years, I have unfortunately never had a good pizza in spite of numerous attempts in Piemonte, Verona, Lombardia, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Toscana and Campaina. That is until I entered Kokalos.
The restaurant came recommended by our AirBnB host. The restaurant is in fact out in a remote countryside location overlooking the valley of the temples and you will need wheels to get there. It was packed by locals when we arrived and a majority had pizza, which we found odd as it was a friday night and the menu was expansive containing a lot of "proper" secondi. So we ordered a simple anchovis pizza, which we always do.
At the first bite, the sensation was overwhealming. Never had I had a pizza with such a perfect combination of a crusty pie, a tomato sauce which was rich and aromatic and perfectly blended spices and toppings. It was the pizza of my life and everything pails in comparison. We broke of with our longstanding of not visiting the same restaurant twice in a row and it was equally fantastic the day after. Coming to Naples after this was such a disappointment as their style is dramatically different from the Sicilian way; soft bread a lot of fat and literally no taste at all. I understand this is my personal opinion but in either case, if you seek an extraordinary restaurant experience, this is the one as the views and service are equally...
Read moreWe got there accidentaly, it is very close to the Valley of temples, has great view (this is Beautiful area when it comes to nature, but not really nice area urbanistically, Agrigento is rather harsh, But here at the Air-cooled patio (a blessing) at Kokalos You can see forests, hills, vineyard, horses, and of course temples, and breathe at last)
Food:
Red wine is a win, one of best home wine nero'd avolas we had on Sicily,
Pasta Alla Norma was amazing, homely, aubergine was done so well, really i miss it. And i like Alla Norma a lot, and only when done with care and proper ingridients
Gamberini nice, tender
Side-salads Grilled raddichio and grana with salad, highly recommend
Good płace to runaway from the heat, they were open at 3 PM
Last but not least,
The silver-haired waiter was such a friendly, heartwarming person, attendent to our needs, never intrusive but very hospitsble. Best service i had on Sicily, miłe grazie
i had to write this review because we were positive surprised. I would totally...
Read moreA restaurant with a great view of the temples and Agrigento in the background. That's about all I can say about it. Touristy foods. I had Pizza Diavolo before in northern Italy. If I remembered correctly, they had cheese in them. This one is just tomato sauce with some extremely salty capers and some salami. I had to ask for crushed red peppers to make it spicy hot. The Zuppa di Cozze was not impressive at all. I had many at other restaurants and they all have white wine sauce and here is sweet tomato sauce. What's up with the sugar! The gripe I have with some Sicilian restaurants is that they add sugar into their tomato sauce to cut down on the sourness which deforms the original taste. Bottom line is the food here is not great. I guess you pay for the view. If you want a glass of wine or beer with a pizza (not pizza diavolo) and a view. You can come here. I wouldn't order the appetizer or dishes. So, keep it cheap and...
