Ristorante Da Mario — Restaurant in Buonconvento

What a diabolical place!! Avoid at all costs!! We hadn’t pre-booked a table for our family of five and turned up on a Sunday evening hoping for some authentic Tuscan cuisine. There was only one other table occupied when we arrived and asked for a table for 5. The waiter (Mario presumably) sneered at us as he pushed 2 tables together for us. He then brought the food menus but not the wine menu. My wife asked for the wine menu and was sneered at again. The wine menu was tossed on the table. He very quickly came to take our order, clearly in a hurry to feed us and get rid of us. My 12 year old son asked for the pulled pork. On the menu, this item was written as “pulled pork” (English) on both the Italian description and English translation. He claimed not to understand. I got my son to point at the item on the menu, and he still claimed to not understand. All with further sneering. At this point we decided to leave. I will not part with hard earned cash for such disgraceful and rude service as this. Please do yourself a favour and avoid. The Enoteca 3 or 4 doors down the street offers a far more pleasant...

Meh. Good food, but nothing outstanding. However, they couldn’t have been less interested in serving us or making our lunch a pleasant or memorable experience. Menus were almost tossed at us as the waiter passed by, and whilst not impolite, service with a smile it was not… When I came to pay, the same waiter must have passed me five times busying himself with more important activities. I asked the other chap in the end and his Mum came out and took my money, but it wasn’t the greatest experience. Sono tornato al Ristorante Da Mario a Buonconvento dopo dieci anni, spinto da un bellissimo ricordo: una Fiorentina impeccabile, cucinata alla perfezione, gustosa, succulenta, accompagnata da un servizio caloroso e attento. Quell'esperienza rimase impressa nella mia memoria come una delle migliori mai avute.

Purtroppo, la recente visita ha completamente ribaltato questa immagine positiva. Entrato con grande entusiasmo e con la voglia di rivivere quei sapori, ho ordinato la Fiorentina, ma subito ho percepito che non era più il piatto distintivo di questo ristorante. Mi è stato chiesto di alzarmi per scegliere la carne direttamente da un frigorifero, e mi sono sentito praticamente spinto verso una bistecca confezionata che mi è stata consigliata come “buona”.

La delusione è stata evidente già dal primo assaggio. La carne era sì tenera, ma priva di qualsiasi sapore, completamente piatta e insipida, tanto che neanche l'aggiunta di sale e pepe è riuscita a ravvivarla. Inoltre, la bistecca non è stata tagliata davanti a me, ma servita su una piastra calda già pronta; è arrivata in tavola senza il minimo rito o cura che ci si aspetterebbe da una Fiorentina fatta come si deve.

Il cameriere, pur simpatico, ha precisato che il locale è gestito dalla terza generazione della stessa famiglia, ma, a giudicare dalla mia esperienza, il risultato è purtroppo disastroso. È triste constatare come un ristorante che un tempo brillava per qualità e attenzione al dettaglio sia ora scivolato in una gestione più industriale e impersonale, lontana dal calore e dall’autenticità di una volta.

Questa esperienza mi ha lasciato con un senso di delusione profonda (per la cronaca la bistecca è costata €70) sperando che la direzione possa recuperare quell’identità e qualità che facevano del Ristorante Da Mario un punto di riferimento della...
