This little gem is not located in the center of Merano, but it is spitting distance from the train station Merano Maia-Bassa which is brilliant because you do not need to bring your suitcases far and it's a convenient location for visiting the surrounding area (like Glorenza).||The hotel itself is clean, comfortable and charming. I slept very well. The staff is very nice and accommodating (helping me with several special requests). The restaurant serves good food - mostly pizza, pasta and meat dishes (not fine dining, but for someone living in the UK it is outstanding fare). The staff is especially adept at languages, fluent in at least German, Italian and English and quite happy to switch between languages. I would order my food in German and my boyfriend in Italian and the staff would happily switch back and forth without batting an eyelash. ||The area around is not overly stunning and it is a ~20-30min walk to the city center. However, there is a frequent bus that leaves right outside the door and - if you don't take the most obvious route into town - your walk will be mostly along the Adige and Passirio rivers on a promenade without cars past lovely homes and far more expensive hotels. If anything i found staying outside of town made me see more of the beautiful places I would have otherwise ignored. ||I would definitely...

Read moreWhen I arrived, things were not going well for me. I had left a backpack containing passports on the train to Bolzano. I had little idea of the best way to proceed to try and recover it. At the Hotel Cavallino, Dirk was at the reception desk. I asked him if he could help. Initially, he did not seem to have any good ideas either, but after a few minutes, he was on the phone. After a 15-minute conversation, he told me that the backpack had been located and I could go back to Bolzano to meet an incoming train and reclaim it. He had also arranged for me to meet the police at the station to verify that the backpack was mine. His solution was flawless. I was very happy and very impressed with the effort he made on our behalf. Thanks Dirk!||Following that adventure, of course I would have a favorable opinion. But I can honestly say that our stay was very pleasant in every regard. ||The location was excellent. It is directly across the road from the Merano-Maia Bassa train station. There is a bus stop right at the hotel, and a bike path goes into Merano.||The room was clean and comfortable. The restaurant fare was tasty. And, to an exceptional degree, the staff was friendly and helpful. Altogether, it was a great place to...
