UPDATE: Updated information from our second visit. The experience for the second time was not really as pleasant as before. Opening times on Google from 18:30, we'arrived at 18:50 as normal europeans are not eating dinner at 9pm. We've got information that the kitchen is closed till 19:30. Till then we've got only something to drink. The service was poor, for such as restaurant it is not good idea to employee 15 years old girls with no experiences. We made a mistake the day before saying the owner that we'll visit the restaurant only once again as we're leaving. During this dinner we were the only table that the owner did not show any interesst - not a word, even the day before we were chatting with him, he was explaining us everything, we told him how amazing the food is. But this time nothing. We've ordered a starter, pizza and pasta somewhere around 19:35, the starter arrived at 20:10 - I can understand that in the restaraunt were two tables and the starter was really complicated melted cheese on stone....
I have ordered pasta with eggplant and fish. I have received pasta with tomato sauce, after notifiing I have received pasta with eggplant, no fish, explanation was that the pasta with fish is a different dish. Okay...poor english communication from the service. Next bad point, my wife received pizza and I received my pasta like after 10 minutes, that should not happen in good restaurant. The owner did even come to ask if everything was okay, not a word, nothing. We've trusted him he's a nice guy, actually he's only good in prentending to be nice. Sorry for not telling this experience to the owner personally, but he was always talking to other guests, those who possible can arrive again in comparison with us. The food was nevertheless great.
OLD INFORMATION:
This was simply THE best experience of our two weeks trip on Sicily. The freshness is here on the first place. The owner is really friendly and will epxplain you everything also in english, which is not really common on Sicily. Fresh, excelent and authentic food, great atmosphere, friendly owner, what do you need more! Can recommend to everyone, we're going there tomorrow again! Was so amazed of the whole experience that I did not took any picture of the food and that's exactly how it should...
Read moreWhenever I travel, authenticity is a must. Tonight, we drove away from touristy Cefalu in favor of spending the evening in a real Sicilian town. The question: Could we still find one?
It took some research but I read some great reviews about Sikula - Pizza e cucina, a restaurant in the quiet town of Sant' Ambrogio, about 10 kms east of bustling Cefalu. And yes... This town oozes authenticity.
After being seated, I asked if they had house wine. To my surprise, they did! The custom of serving house wine is fast disappearing, so ask before overspending. It'll usually come in a carafe or clear bottle sans label. It's always good, but 50-75% less.
After our initial good fortune, three of us ordered pizzas and one, a sea bass pasta dish. My wife got the Pizza Margherita, my friend got the Pizza Ragusa and I chose the Al Porcini. All the pizzas were outstanding and I even finished the entire pie!
But perhaps the most wonderful part of our visit was meeting Angelo, the owner and 'brains' behind the eclectic menu, and Alessia, our fantastic waitress from Palermo. Alessia treated us like 'famigghia', which made a wonderful meal that much better. So check out Sikula Pizza e cucino. You won't be...
Read moreWe looked for somewhere to eat not too far from Finale, where we were staying. Found Sikula on the web, and gave it a try. And what a very nice experience it turned out to be. Lovely, home-made food and a friendly atmosphere. We did not try the pizza, but had very nice seabass with tomatoes and lemon ravioli. We returned two days later for a tapas meal. The Caponata is to die for, and the tomato salad with honeyed, roasted onions was stunning. The tiramisu was adapted by using stout beer as a base - so original. Angelo is establishing himself as a go-to place for people in the Region, but he is also a key part of the local community. When we there on a November Thursday evening, there was a local birthday gathering on the next table. Well...
