L'Antico Arco Osteria — Restaurant in Ceglie Messapica

Lovely find on a rainy evening when nothing else was open yet. We saw lights on and a woman (presumably the owner) sweeping rainwater away from the doorway. We asked her if they were open and she relied “Dieci minuti”. Then she gestured us to come in and wait inside out of the rain. The place was warm and homey, and we were politely greeted by the busboy, who brought us water, wine and some homemade taralli to munch on. At 7 o’clock, opening time, the waiter (presumably the son) took our order and the food arrived promptly thereafter. Our appetizers, meatballs and Caprese salad were generous and delicious. Two pasta dishes, both also yummy and well portioned, followed along with some sautéed chicory and a mixed salad. We were stuffed, and my partner wasn’t feeling well, so we skipped dessert. They offered us complementary Limoncello. When I politely refused, stating that we had to leave and I asked for directions back to where we parked the car. The waiter poured me a cup of limoncello to go. He then walked us to practically where we parked. Such a warm and inviting experience on top of great food and very reasonable prices. A sleepy Wednesday night in October found us dropping in here for dinner, only to find out there was a big birthday party taking up most of the seating. No fear, they found us a little table for 2 next to the kitchen and the tastiness began. The bread was crusty and moist, perfect for sopping up the extra sugo that came with the meatball appetizer. We made the mistake of ordering two primis, and I say mistake only because the portions were SOOOO large! The maccheroni di grano arso came with a red sauce, sausage and was garnished with cheese. The handmade Orecchiette with a rabe sauce with a bit more anchovy than my taste, but it was quite tasty. We barely had room for the lamb chops that followed with a delicious side of the rabe, because we never eat enough veggies in Italy. All of this was washed down with a bottle of Susumaniello from the Tenute Rubino winery called “OltreMé” that went very well with our meal. Caratteristico ristorante nel borgo antico di Ceglie. Ci sono stato con un gruppo di amici in Agosto, il ristorante era pieno ed è evidente che non hanno la capacità di gestire tutti i tavoli che hanno a disposizione, come conseguenza il servizio è stato piuttosto scadente. Peccato perché ambiente, cibo e prezzi meritano decisamente. Di seguito il resoconto della purtroppo deludente esperienza con il servizio: La cameriera che ci ha portato il vino ha versato un bicchiere per l'assaggio, ma non si è preoccupata di ascoltare il parere a riguardo, se ne è andata via prima dell'assaggio e non ha versato il vino agli altri commensali. Abbiamo ordinato due porzioni di un aperitivo misto con taglieri di salumi e formaggi e altre specialità. Ci sono arrivati vari "pezzi" per lo più in multipli di tre, cosa incompatibile con il fatto che fossero due porzioni. Ho chiesto spiegazioni ad un cameriere su quant pezzi delle varie pietanze fossero compresi in una porzione e se eventualmente ne avessimo ricevuti meno (o forse di più?), ma lui è sembrato piuttosto confuso dal mio punto, tirando fuori giustificazioni sul fatto che noi fossimo in sette e altre cose che non c'entravano nulla. Probabilmente stressato dal troppo carico di lavoro mi ha liquidato rapidamente e mi ha mandato il titolare il quale non troppo cortesemente ha chiesto quale fosse il problema. A quel punto gran parte del cibo era stato consumato e il discorso si è concentrato su un piatto superstite con tre crostini con burrata, come esempio. Il titolare, senza minimamente scusarsi o comunque rispondere su quanti pezzi fossero inclusi in una porzione, si è preoccupato (in modo non troppo cordiale) di farci avere altri crostini, giurando però di avere impiattato personalmente gli altri piatti che componevano l'aperitivo e di essere sicuro che tutti gli altri pezzi fossero a multipli di quattro, cosa in realtà non vera. Ultima nota negativa, nonostante una lista di primi abbastanza ampia e interessante, c'è un limite nel numero di primi che si possono ordinare ad un tavolo (massimo tre primi diversi), il che è piuttosto fastidioso quando il tavolo è composto da numerose persone, e conferma inoltre l'impreparazione organizzativa che li rende non in grado di gestire volumi troppo elevati. Sarei ben più disposto ad accettare che i primi non arrivino contemporaneamente a patto di avere una libera...
