Ristorante Piper — Restaurant in Crotone

I thing I never tolerate at restaurants is menu without prices and this is exactly what happened to me at this place. Both waiter and the chef did not speak English and they were not able to explain any prices or help us with ordering in any way. We have ordered Pasta Frutti di Mare which was good , however mixed with a lot of oil which can add taste to almost any dish. After all they didn’t even create a tax receipt, just a handwritten note. The service wasn’t nice to us and even haven’t tried to be , maybe it’s because we were foreigners or because we have ordered only one dish for two. At 19:30 there was no one eating in this place , which adds even more peculiarity to this situation as all other places where flooded with people at this time. Small restaurant on the sea front almost hidden by the large restaurant next door. We were the first to arrive in the evening and it was quiet through the evening. Just as well as the guy serving tables also seemed to be cooking. It was a small menu but we were pushed towards a smaller choice, we were told mussels were not good in September although we have eaten them elsewhere. We asked for house red wine but got rose. We ordered one baked fish and one swordfish. However a plate of marinated swordfish, octopus and potatoes also arrived as a starter which we later realised we were not charged for. It was very good. The roasted fish was OK but the middle was not cooked. Bread was very good. With a bottle of water the bill was 47 euros....

Sono tornato nella mia città natale, Crotone, per un weekend toccata e fuga, con il desiderio di gustare del buon pesce in un posto autentico. Dopo aver consultato diverse recensioni, ho scelto il Piper, e devo dire che è stata una scelta perfetta.

Appena entrati, Enzo, il padrone di casa, ci ha accolti con quella cordialità tutta crotonese che ti fa sentire immediatamente a casa. La pasta è rigorosamente fatta a mano, e il menù varia a seconda della giornata: una vera garanzia di freschezza. Quel giorno c’erano i covatelli, la pasta tipica crotonese, preparati magistralmente con sugo di mare. Un piatto che da solo vale la visita.

Abbiamo iniziato con un antipasto di mare misto, ricco di bontà e sapori genuini. Ho persino gustato le alici, che di solito non mangio, ma lì le ho apprezzate davvero. Non potevano mancare le “vrasciole” alla crotonese, le classiche polpette fritte: sia di melanzane che di carne, croccanti fuori e morbide dentro. Il tutto accompagnato da un ottimo rosato della zona di Cirò Marina, vino della casa ma di grande qualità.

Siamo stati talmente bene che siamo tornati anche la sera: mio figlio (15 mesi) ha avuto subito a disposizione il seggiolone e si è trovato perfettamente a suo agio. Ha voluto di nuovo i covatelli, stavolta al sugo semplice, mentre io e mia moglie abbiamo scelto due spigole freschissime cotte alla perfezione: morbide, delicate, senza eccesso di sale, segno di una lavorazione attenta e rispettosa del pesce. Come antipasto, stavolta, abbiamo optato per formaggi e salumi locali, anch’essi ottimi.

I prezzi sono onesti e proporzionati alla qualità dei prodotti e alla generosità delle porzioni: né troppo alti né troppo bassi, semplicemente giusti.

Purtroppo torno sempre più di rado a Crotone, ma di una cosa sono certo: il Piper sarà la mia tappa fissa ogni volta che tornerò. Un ristorante autentico, accogliente e legato alle tradizioni, dove si mangia bene e si sta ancora meglio.
