Il Grillo — Restaurant in Fermo

This is my first time experiencing a seaside place in Italy other than my beloved Sicily. It came to no surprise that the sea itself is not to my standard, but thankfully Il Grillo lido offers great facilities for individuals, families, couples and kids! Super friendly staff that makes you feel at home, comfortable and elegant settings without being too formal nor excessively "chic". This could be your base, if you are into relaxed beach life....without obviously expecting clear blue waters. Having said that, on the wave-breakers opposite the beach, a wonderful spectacle surprised me in a very positive way. The rocks are covered with life!!! Muscles, Patelle, Oysters and plenty of crabs, populate this otherwise lifeless spot. I'm not an expert of marine biology but the presence of seashells and crustaceous should indicate a pollution free zone. Attractive beachside location overlooking the sea. Food that I had was excellent although the "fish carbonara" was a new one on me, apparently reflecting a desire by more and more restaurants in Italy to ring the changes on traditional dishes. A reservation about the service. Our booked table turned out to be next to the toilets, and when we moved to a nearby table, not marked as reserved, in the almost empty restaurant we were told we could not sit there. (Another couple later occupied it). Also the waitress tried to take away my plate before I had finished. These little things can spoil an otherwise agreeable...

Maybe because it was the first sunny day or maybe because of our host it was perfect, beautiful, and delicious. If only we could have such fresh fish in America. We had carbonara which was uniquely yellow. I think I detect the slightest hint of turmeric or mustard. Our host said it was a house specialty with swordfish cut like you would pancetta. The rolls were artisanal. Then we had the seafood spiedini- to die for as it is said and a baked bronzini. I was stuffed even though we shared plates three ways. Best meal...
