Pizzeria il Vecchio Mulino — Restaurant in Montalcino

Well… We realized immediately upon arrival that we were a) in a pretty new place an b) that the staff was quite inexperienced (one two weeks in the job, the other just arrived from overseas). But the atmosphere is nice, at least before the flood lights outside were switched on. After other guests who arrived 10 minutes after us already ordered we reminded the staff that we still didn’t have menus in our hands. (The cube with the QR code arrived later as we were seated on a blank table on the side as we had a dog with us - thanks for the water by the way!) The pizza we came for was quite good, the dough was delicious (no surprise really given the location). But we had the Tagliere del Mulino as an appetizer. And that was a disappointment as the cheese was probably cut several days ago and not cooled well as it showed green mold and Tyrosine on the cut faces, see picture. It is a) outrageous by the chef to put this on a plate and b) probably due to the inexperience by the waiter that it was put on our table. After we made the waiter aware he asked what he should do. We proposed to get us decent cheese and take the price for the plate off the menu. The waiter later informed us that his boss, who I asked to speak to without success, would offer a 50% discount only. The cheese he brought later and which we also saw on similar plates was perfect. Well, all in all room for improvement as several details were quite nice but others were definitely substandard. A lid on the toilet would be a nice...

We visited this pizzeria last night and left with mixed feelings. The food itself was quite good—fresh, flavorful, and served in huge portions. Honestly, it was almost too much food for one sitting, but definitely great if you like to take leftovers home.

Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the quality of the food. We had to ask for water with our meal, and it never came. A replacement drink order, placed when the food was served, took so long that it didn’t arrive until we were already finished eating. Pizza really awesome, service always attentive, deserts very delicious. Update: Second time we been there we have chosen as a starter the vegetable dish. Declared with seasonable vegetables. Which was actually quite disappointing. Mostly sliced zucchinis with a few spawns of carrots and some onion pieces. Barely spiced. I definitely expected much more. My steak afterwards with fries was pretty tasty. My wife’s pizza, the same as it has been before, was not that good as the first time.
