Poggio Picenze (not to be confused w/ Picenze across the road) is just a few kms outside L'Aquila. Fell upon this agri-turismo as i have family nearby. The building is a restored old mill, nicely decorated, and warmed by wood stoves. Locals come here by bus to have dinner, spend the night, have breakfast before leaving. We had the best meals here - beautiful food, served family style, wine, water, dolce - dinner one night for 9 was E140 -very reasonable. I realized later that dinner lasted 2 1/2 hours! Rooms adjacent are modest but very comfy and warm, as the weather turned very cold the day we were there. The village of Poggio Picenze has a beautiful little cathedral just a short walk away up the cobblestone streets. Took a side trip, 20 min drive, to San Stefano, an old, very old hillside town up in the mountains; apparently very popular in the summer. Had a couple of cute shops and a restaurant, but the best part was the drive up and the incredible views. Took a hike, you'll see where as you can pull your car over and walk up an old rocky road to an even more spectacular vista. Do enjoy this great little stop! This area is...

No internet connection or tv in rooms. The area is known for scorpions, and we found one in our bedroom the last night. That could happen easily when the open windows have no screens. Large room with loft bedroom, very little storage. Kitchenette was useless except for the 'fridge. No dished or glasses to eat with anyway. Very uncomfortable beds and hard pillows, actually, more like cots. Still have to rate it as very good, there is not much choice in this area. If I visit the area again, I would stay here again, mostly...
