La Vecchia Hosteria — Restaurant in Siderno

This is a bit of a delayed review, since I have been here this past September, but I just couldn't get this sour experience out of my head. In all honesty this was probably the worst meal I've had in the Calabria region. I came here with a friend as I heard good things about this place and was naturally excited to try some delicious authentic Italian cuisine, but I was swiftly dissapointed as soon as I tried the food.

The staff was very friendly, but also extremely impersonal as when we went there they were not really busy, yet we felt rushed to eat and leave.

The waiter highly recommended the linguine clams to me after I asked him for a recommendation.......... just a warning to anyone who's reading this, do not order the linguine clams! Being of Italian-Calabrese decent and working in restaurants the majority of my life, I have tried my fair share of pasta, linguine clams included, but I have never had a pasta dish so bland and flavourless like the linguine clams at La Vecchia Hosteria. My mate was equally disappointed with his selection as well for similar reasons.

All in all, this was the worst meal I've had in Italy, considering I've been to Italy 5 times I think that says a lot. Also, just a side note the most expensive...

Dopo l'esperienza positiva dello scorso anno, quest'anno non possiamo riconfermare la valutazione. Il signore (presumo un responsabile di sala e non un cameriere) che ha preso l'ordine, lo stesso ritrovato per il conto alla cassa, aveva empatia 0, era quasi infastidito e ciò già la dice lunga. Il conto non è stato fatto in modo analitico ma in modo complessivo. Quando è stato richiesto il conto analitico, è emerso che alcuni prezzi presenti sul menù non erano aggiornati (mah!) e non corrispondevano a quanto riportato in conto. Il signore che però ci ha servito si è guardato dal riferirlo... Un esempio su tutti di mancato aggiornamento (in buona fede?) :vino della casa da 6 euro a litro indicato su menù a 10 euro a litro sul conto! Quest'anno prezzi lievitati e non indicati in menù, niente sconto e a fine cena quando il cameriere ci ha chiesto se potevano offrirci un amaro, poi ci siamo ritrovati nel conto i tre euro per l'amaro (bah!). Lo scorso anno era stato spontaneamente praticato uno sconto e chi ci serviva aveva offerto l'amaro. Noi dinnanzi a queste anomalie non siamo stati lì a evidenziare la pochezza delle azioni e siamo andati via; anche perchè all'interno del locale era in corso una festa di compleanno molto rumorosa. Il cibo? Accettabile ma nulla di speciale; tra l'altro le patate al forno ordinate erano molto probabimente congelate e cotte male. Morale della favola, a mai più rivederci. Beautiful restaurant, amazing hospitality from Michele and the staff! Such a wholesome experience and treated incredibly well. The seafood was magnificent. We particularly liked the shared appetiser and mix of white fish for our main course. We are travelling from Australia and so happy we found this hidden gem!
