I tried this restaurant on a whim, for dinner on August 20. The venue is stunning, however the service is truly lacking.
When placing my order, I tried asking what the deserts of the day were, but the waitress said “we have mascarpone and some other stuff, I’ll tell you later”, and left. The main was served in about 20 minutes, which is bearable for pasta. Here I must mention that the pasta itself was one of the finest I ever had, with a great lightweight texture that just seemed to melt in my mouth - a great dish even though the sauce is nothing to write home about. Next, I asked for parmesan, which they did not bring in a separate container for the table, only sprinkled some on top of my plate and took it back. This seemed a little weird, but each establishment is different, and if this is their standard procedure, I respect it entirely, as it wasn’t that big of an issue - just seemed a little weird. I was also trying to get another thing to eat, but whenever I asked the waitress she would say “one second” and not come back at all, but rather go to other tables around me, completely acting like she didn’t see me. Perhaps because I was alone, she did not think my tab was important. Moreover, after having ordered a desert to go, I had to wait 36 MINUTES for it to be ready. I was not informed of this beforehand, and after half an hour I had to ask the waitress how much longer it will take. Bear in mind it was only a chocolate desert with strawberry filling. Sometimes more complicated deserts take longer to be ready, but when this is the case, it should always be mentioned to the customer, who can then decide whether they want to wait or not.
While I was paying, the waitress asked whether everything had been okay, and I said “not really”. Important for me to preface here: I did not raise my voice in the slightest, I did not use bad words and I was not disrespectful for a second. I, however, felt unhappy with my experience and wished to express that, in hopes it will help improve her future behaviour. Even while I was sat, I smiled at her and tried being nice in spite of feeling disrespected, but after waiting for what felt like too long for me, I couldn’t even muster a smile anymore, so my face probably showed my feelings. When I explained to the waitress what the issues were, she unbelievably went on to say that “because you didn’t have a reservation it takes much more time to serve you, since we are so full”. This is for one, untrue, and completely insane altogether, since people with reservations also place their orders after arriving, not before. Also, in a restaurant, as anywhere else, everyone should be treated with equal kindness and courtesy, as we are all clients - reservation or not. She was very condescending and unfriendly, and also unwilling to accept responsibility. Trying to justify or excuse such garbage behaviour is never fine in the hospitality industry, and it just left a sour taste in my mouth. Also, acting with arrogance and showing distaste and disrespect towards your customers is a no-no in any restaurant. Waitresses with such attitude should be fired on the spot.
It’s such a pity when people like this ruin establishments, because the food isn’t half bad and the dining experience is definitely unique. Also, just from being in the Osteria and seeing the chef, you can tell how passionate he is, how much effort and commitment he has for his work and the entire place, which in itself is a truly wonderful fact, and I, as a client, was in awe of it.
Still, because of the waiting staff, this was definitely one of the worst restaurant experiences in my entire life. As long as the waitresses or their attitude don’t change, avoid...
Read moreThe food is good and most of the waitresses are friendly, but I would like to point out that the tall waitress on the night of Friday 7th July was unfriendly and even rude. I am very uncomfortable with Peter Cadonici's "leftist" comments, as you as an Italian are treated normally by the waitresses and you do not feel the waitresses' unfriendly attitude towards foreigners, your subjective and hypocritical comments are not going to help the development of this restaurant. I think we all need to be brave and fight back when it comes to unfair treatment and if you feel it is rude to protect your rights, then bless you Mr Cadonici for always being graceful. Anyway this is a nice restaurant so it needs to offer as good a service as its dishes. ...
