Have been a Costco member in US - 7 years, Canada - 2 years and now started Costco Japan membership. Costco Japan items are more costly than US or Canada. Gold Star member costs JPY 4480/year. Coming to Makuhari Costco, you enter through the 2nd floor - non food and come down to 1st - food.
Getting parking on weekend is very tough. You have to park at AEON mall nearby if you come after 12 Noon.
Food selection is great. The whole grilled chicken at JPY 799 is a steal. The 4lb Tiramisu cake at JPY 2199 as well as the Cheesecake at JPY 1598 - both are excellent. The half sheet cake runs JPY 2380 and as usual can feed 25 people. The gigantic sushi trays are great at JPY 2800. Kirkland Milk Cheese - not processed - variety is great althought the 4lbs kirkland sliced cheese was nowhere to be seen. Baked selection including croissants, bagels etc are great too.
Nonfood is definitely a dissapointment. A 34 inch monitor i checked had a much higher price than Amazon. Same for laptop and other electronics items. Speaking of electronics - no Bose and Apple laptops/tablets - not sure whether this was my miss but I could not find any. The apparel pricing is even more atrocious. Soaps and shampoos were a damp squib - only 1 variety of soap and 2 of shampoos. Come on Costco!! You can do better.
Food court is outside, you have to exit the store to come here. There is no covered eating space - not sure why. In July/Aug, it gets pretty hot and eating under the sun is not pleasant. Tried the pizza - slices are big and taste great - lots of cheese/toppings at JPY 380/slice. The hot dog and Soda combo - 100% pork was great at JPY 180. The dog was juicy and tasty. Did not like the chicken nugget and fries combo - extremely dry priced at JPY 980. Do note that the chicken nugget and fries combo is served in a KFC sized bucket. Kids liked the ice cream - huge servings and it’s soft-melt-in-your-mouth ice cream.
Costco Makuhari Staff are very friendly, hard working and maintain a clean shop. Shout out to them.
Costco Japan is a pale shadow of Costco US or Canada. Sure, the format is more or less the same but the extreme value...
Read moreI was in the neighborhood and decided to visit this Costco as it was 5 min away by train and right next to the train station.
When you arrive, you will notice that it different from Costco in Canada as it is a multistorey Costco with the food court located on the bottom floor and the goods are at the top. You will be taking an escalator ride to the top floor where you will be greeted by electronics, clothing, pharmacy, hearing aids and other non-perishable goods. Once you are done you will take another escalator down a floor where you will find the typical groceries/food items like seafood, meats, bread and dry foods.
I was blown away by the selection of items at this Costco as they had many unique Japanese items to choose from and at really good prices which makes souvenir shopping very hard. Even there was a wide selection of meats from Canada which is cheaper than what you find in Canada in my opinion which I find ridiculous! The best part is your current Costco card does work in this Japanese Costco which makes this trip worthwhile!
The food court being located on the ground floor makes it accessible to everyone even to those without a Costco card. The selection of food was way better than what I found in Costco Canada as they had some actual Japanese style foods available like Hokkaido soft cream and shrimp katsu burger. I tried the bulgogi bake and a meat/veg pizza where I wished I didn't order the pizza slice as it was ok and the bulgogi bake was the true star being extremely delicious and filling.
Overall, highly recommend the trip to experience a very different Costco than yours but keep in mind that the train ride would be about an hour and you will need to consider carrying space especially...
Read moreThis is the best branch of Costco and the most convenient one with IKEA, LaLaPort, Round1 and EON’s biggest shopping center here in Japan nearby. It’s located in Chiba and usually there is not that much traffic(there is traffic from LaLaPort if you’re coming here from Tokyo like me). Honestly, I do not like the air quality here because my throat gets dry very fast. The variety of options is very big but for me, the sports category is pretty small. You cannot even get a badminton racket, a football goalpost but you can get a freaking small car for kids. Honestly, they need to add some things for the teenager category. But my favorite part here is the amount of imported food you get here. Also, the electronics section is massive and I, personally, love electronics. It’s very cheap too since it’s a wholesale market. The food is really cheap too but I do not like the ice cream, they have a weird after tastes and I hate the soya patty burgers and that’s the only burger I can eat there since I am vegetarian. They should replace the soya patties with potato patties because potato ones are delicious. No complaints with the delicious pizza but the falafel is very cold when served. The seating is dirty and loud too but I guess I cannot expect much from cheap food. I would rate is a 3.5 but since I can’t rate it that much I rated it a 4 instead of a 3 because there are many...
