I went on a trip to Fukui for the first time and thought I should leave some reviews in English and French of the restaurants I enjoyed during that time!
Akiyoshi is a famous Fukui style Yakitori chain. You eat at the counter or at the table (I strongly recommend the counter) and you order skewers by the dozen! Everything is really good and although I also tried the chain in Tokyo, I have to admit that the quality in Fukui was much better. The atmosphere of this particular store is absolutely the epitome of what I love about such places in Japan: warm, open and with loud "irashaimase", one of the employees is particularly amazing at it. Anyway, I only stayed in Fukui for a few days and went there twice.

Read moreVery popular, bustling and well-known yakitori restaurant with a perennial queue. There are tables for groups, but the counter around the open kitchen is where the cooking drama is. Orders and cooking are done right before you, and the skewers deposited on a stainless steel ledge. The skewers are justifiably good, with a variety of meats and vegetables to choose from in sets of 5 or in pairs. Some breaded and fried skewers also available, as well as sharing dishes. Friendly, efficient service with English...
Read moreThe yakitori chain. It isn't bad by any measure, but it is over rated. You ask 9 out of 10 people in Fukui what the best yakitori place is, they say Akiyoshi. It's not. Not by a long shot. The worst thing is they are always super crowded and are one of the more if not the most expensive yakitori restaurant in town. You won't have a bad time here, and the food is good, and you might spend 500 to 1000 yen more here, its not gonna break the bank. Its just not...
