The short version: Koguma (仔ぐま) is an excellent place to get okonomiyaki, especially if you’re gluten-free. Ken, the owner, is a friendly and charismatic host. He will happily talk with you through his translating device, accommodating any type of foreigner. This will be an experience you will never forget. The long version: To get food at Koguma you’ll have to reach out to Ken, the owner, in advance. It is worth the effort, as doing so will set you up for an intimate and entirely unique dining experience. As Ken makes the okonomiyaki, he will chat with you through a translation device he has. Ken told us the story of how his restaurant came to be, the history of okonomiyaki, as well as some history about Hiroshima itself. The food was great, and Ken’s charisma and service made everything even better. He’s an advocate for those with allergies, as he has recently developed a gluten allergy himself. This may be the only gluten-free okonomiyaki place in Hiroshima. I highly recommend Koguma to anyone looking to try okonomiyaki, especially those sensitive to gluten. Ken will provide a memorable experience—he’s the best!

We came for the gluten-free Okonomiyaki for my wife, I took the regular one. But in this case regular means that we both had - hands down - the best Okonomiyaki in our life there. We love how Ken helps to make Japan more accessable for everybody by providing save options for the most common allergies and dietary needs. We stayed for the great company that Ken Sama was and learned from this open minded and knowledgeable man about Hiroshima's and Japan's history, language and mentality, shared deep thoughts and now are grateful for the connection we made. It's not common to have the opportunity to talk on this level with local citizens. Our stay felt less like visiting a restaurant and more like visiting an old acquaintance. The restaurant isn't located in one of the typical tourist hot spots, but truly authentic and definitely worth a deviation. If you visit Miayima or Hiroshima, it's a must to stop by. Hot tip: Gluten-free Okonomiyaki or a table are pre-ordered via Facebook messenger at least one day in advance

I got to experience gluten free Hiroshima style okonomiyaki that was prepared with such care! He utilized gluten free ingredients as well as a separate cooking space. While he was preparing the dish he talked me through step by step. It was fun to watch and learn! Nakamura San explained that he wanted to prepare okonomiya for everyone to enjoy. He does gluten free, allergen free, low sugar as well as a softer version to avoid choking. He also prepares an original okonomiyaki which is what is prepared on the flat top in the photos (non celiac husband ordered that). We both really enjoyed this meal! He knows basic English and communicated with a translation device. We were able to talk and enjoy his story telling. I would recommend this place to anyone who is gluten free or celiac! Look into making a reservation so he can have ingredients prepared for your visit!
