竹鮨 — Restaurant in Iwanai

Really special sushi restaurant in the little town of Iwanai. The sushi and sake were fantastic, the service was great, and the atmosphere was really friendly and pleasant. Also very affordable considering the quality.

We ordered a la carte, but they offer tasting sets at different price points. Everything we had was excellent. I’m not a fan of sea urchin, but a couple people in our group had it and they said it tasted amazing - like butter.

Speaking of service that goes above and beyond, we asked the owner to call us a taxi after the meal. When they couldn’t reach the taxi company, the owner told us to meet her outside and she drove us back to our hotel. I’ve never had that level of service in the US, or even in Japan. We first came to Iwanai the town on a quiet Sunday and had our eyes on this place for lunch. They did not disappoint! The chef and hostess were warm and friendly. Omakase from the day’s special showcasing local’s produce was really of excellent quality.
