Are you English speaking or maybe foreign to Japan?? Please read before going to MaDa restaurant. I don’t usually write reviews but I had to for this very poor experience.
Their meats are very high quality, probably one of my favorite meals out here in Kaga so far. But it is a shame their customer service to foreigners is so bad and they are shady to non-Japanese people.
My boyfriend and I can speak and understand a little bit of Japanese and noticed they were 1000% messing with us.
To start when we walked in, a bald man immediately told one of the waiters to get an English menu without us even sitting down yet. They then sat us at the bar so we faced them the whole meal.
We started to order, sake to share and 2 waters, but they only gave us one cup for sake and one cup for water — even though we literally held up our fingers for the respective amount of servings. I ordered 2 bowls of rice, again holding up 2 fingers and the waiter repeated it back to me — and they only gave 1 bowl of rice. Whatever I ordered they would give to my boyfriend, and vice versa.
There is a man with hideous teeth and messy hair who was the one mainly mocking us. He kept laughing and saying “eigo eigo” which means English along with mocking me under his breath every time we would try and speak Japanese.
He was doing this right in front of us throughout our meal. He did this every time we tried to order or talk with the servers. There were two female waiters and they were definitely mocking us too.
Also, when we asked for the check to pay, the waiter looked at the man with hideous teeth and he made a face that looked shady.
We were clearly over charged and they did not give me a receipt — everywhere we have eaten always gave one.
The English menu prices are also 20¥ more than the Japanese menu prices.
Bad experience overall, it is a shame their food was so great. This is not bashing the restaurant but a fair warning to my fellow foreign travelers. Prepare to experience this if you plan...
Read moreThe ¥4500 yen beef set was SO GOOD! The beef was super tender!! Literally blew my mind away.
Before entering the restaurant, I read Ashley’s review from around Dec 2023. I was a little skeptical about the restaurant but went ahead anyway. No regret at all! I’m also a foreigner (Asian though). They gave me the English menu right away. I still had the Japanese menu on hand so I compared prices quickly, and since I can read Kanji, I find no differences between the two.
The female server was very nice. When I was ordering the sake, she asked in Japanese whether I wanted hot or cold (which I understood by context, not by listening to her). She already knew I am not Japanese but still asked in Japanese. (Is it a good thing or a bad thing?) I answered “あつい, hot” and she immediately repeated “はい hot” and embarrassedly laughed a little bit for her limited English.
As for the overcharge problem which Ashley mentioned in another review, I didn’t have the same problem. They gave us a credit card receipt right away...
Read moreI really have no idea what Ashley is talking about ( the reviewer who has beef with this restaurant). If you want delicious food with excellent service, come here.
Make sure to order the set with all wagyu beef (4500 yen the time of review). It is melt in your mouth amazing.
Enough said, I did not order a kaisaki in room and this more than made up for me being a cheapskate.
The food...
