I don't know what people are talking about when they claim this place has friendly staff. Maybe it's because we're foreign, but this cafe had the rudest staff I've encountered in Karuizawa!! I tried to ask how long the wait was (in Japanese) and the owner kept interrupting me in English before I could even speak one word, assuming I couldn't speak Japanese, and answering questions I wasn't asking! For example, telling me how to write on the sign up sheet, telling me "yes, you can write in English." I never intended to, we are in Japan, I'm not going to expect them to read English. While we waited for 10 minutes to be seated, we looked at the menu, and their cafe lattes are twice the price of those at your average cafe, and 4.7 times the cost of a conbini coffee... the atmosphere looked nice, but not worth a 900 yen cappuchino, rude staff and a 15 minute wait, so we left. We went here partly because there weren't many places open when we arrived, but after waiting, other places were opened, and we went to the cafe in the station instead, which...

At first, we actually really liked this shop. The young male staff member was super friendly and polite, and we even complimented them on their riddle puzzles, which were pretty fun. We thought we’d found a great spot.
But then the owner (an older man sitting at the cashier who claimed to be the shop owner) completely ruined the experience. My partner and I were sitting together on the same bench solving the puzzle when he suddenly came over and, in a very rude tone, told me to move to the opposite bench. He said that in Japan, even couples shouldn’t sit closely together in public because it “bothers other people.”
We were stunned. We hadn’t done anything wrong. My partner politely explained that we’ve lived in Japan for years and that there’s no such social rule, but the owner claimed that it’s his shop, his rules, so if we want to sit like that, go back to our own country.
We saw other reviews saying this place treats foreigners and even children poorly — now we totally get it. Honestly, no matter how nice the atmosphere is, it’s not worth it. If you’re a foreigner thinking of visiting, be warned: the attitude here is unbelievably hostile for a place in the...
Read moreOwner is rude. Glared at us as soon as we entered. Waiter was friendly and gave us a puzzle game to solve. While we were solving the puzzle the owner asked us not to sit on the same side of bench. If offended by a couple sitting together he could have said so in a respectful and friendly way. Instead he asked us (expats) to go and sit like that in our own country. We asked for the bill and got "make sure you pay before you leave". Crazy rude. Maybe he was...
